ለሚሊዮኖች ሕመም መድኃኒት የሆኑት ኢትዮጵያዊ ሳይንቲስት

ዛሬ የኢትዮጵያ ማሕጸን ስላፈራቻቸውና በመላው ዓለም የሚገኙ ብዙ ሚሊዮኖችን ከስቃይ ስለፈወሱት ስለ ታላቁ ሳይንቲስት ፕሮፌሰር አክሊሉ ለማ የሕይወት ተሞክሮና አበርክቶ እንቃኛለን።

አክሊሉ ለማ በ1928 ዓ.ም በምስራቁ የኢትዮጵያ ክፍል በምትገኘው ጂግጂጋ ከተማ ውስጥ ተወለደ። አክሊሉ ያደገው ከእናቱ ቤተሰቦች ጋር የመጀመሪያ ደረጃ ትምህርቱን በተማረበት በሐረር ከተማ ነው። ከልጅነቱ ጀምሮ ጎበዝ ከሚባሉ ተማሪዎች መካከል የሚመደብ ነበር። የአባቱ ስም አቶ በቀለ ወልደየስ ቢሆንም እንደአባት ስም መጠሪያ ያደረገው ያሳደጉትንና የእናቱ አባት የነበሩትን አቶ ለማን ነው። ከሐረር ወደ አዲስ አበባ ከመጣ በኋላ የሁለተኛ ደረጃ ትምህርቱን በጀኔራል ዊንጌት ትምህርት ቤት ተከታትሏል። የመጀመሪያ ዲግሪ ትምህርቱን በአዲስ አበባ ዩኒቨርሲቲ (በወቅቱ አጠራር ‹‹ቀዳማዊ ኃይለሥላሴ ዩኒቨርሲቲ››) ካጠናቀቀ በኋላ፣ የሁለተኛ ዲግሪ ትምህርቱን በውጭ አገር ለመከታተል የሚያስችለውን እድል በማግኘቱ ወደ አሜሪካ ተጓዘ። በዚያም በዊስኮንሲን ዩኒቨርሲቲ የሁለተኛ ዲግሪ ትምህርቱን ተከታተለ። የሁለተኛ ዲግሪ ትምህርቱን በብቃት ያጠናቀቀው አክሊሉ፣ የዶክትሬት ዲግሪ ትምህርቱን በፓቶባዮሎጂ (Pathobiology) ትምህርት በታዋቂው የጆንስ ሆፕኪንስ ዩኒቨርሲቲ ለመማር ቻለ። በዩኒቨርሲቲው በነበረው ቆይታም በዋነኛነት በቢልሃርዚያ በሽታና በመድኃኒቶቹ ላይ አተኩሮ ሲመራመር ነበር።

ዶክተር አክሊሉ የዶክትሬት ዲግሪ ትምህርቱን አጠናቅቆ ወደ ኢትዮጵያ ሲመለስም በኢትዮጵያ ንጉሰ ነገሥት መንግሥት የጤና ጥበቃ ሚኒስቴር ውስጥ ተመድቦ ማገልገል ጀመረ። አክሊሉ የማህበረሰቡን ዕለታዊ እንቅስቃሴዎች መመልከት ያዘወትር ነበር።

ከዕለታት አንድ ቀን ዶክተር አክሊሉ ለስራው ክንውን ይረዳው ዘንድ ወደ ሰሜኑ የኢትዮጵያ ክፍል፣ ዓድዋ አካባቢ ተጓዘ። የአካባቢው ሰዎች እንደወትሮው ሁሉ በወንዝ ወራጅ ውሃ ልብሶቻቸውን ያጥባሉ። ያ ለእነርሱ የተለመደ የኑሮ እንቅስቃሴ ነው። ለዶክተር አክሊሉ ግን በወቅቱ የተመለከተው ነገር ዛሬም ድረስ በስሙ ለተመዘገበውና ለሚሊዮኖች ችግር መፍትሄ ላገኘበት የምርምር ተግባሩ መነሻ ሆነ። ዶክተር አክሊሉ ከላይ ሆነው እንዶድ በተባለው ቅጠል ልብስ ከሚያጥቡት የአካባቢው ሰዎች ስር የሚገኙ ብዙ ቀንድ አውጣዎች ሞተው ተመለከተ። ዶክተር አክሊሉ ተገረመ። አግራሞቱ ያለምክንያት አልነበረም፤የሚሊዮኖች ሕይወት በስቃይ የተሞላ እንዲሆን ያደረገውን የቢልሃርዚያ በሽታን የሚያስተላልፉትን ትሎች የሚሸከሙት (መጠጊያ የሆኑት) ነፍሳት ቀንድ አውጣዎች (Snails) እንደሆኑ ስለሚያውቅ ነበር።

ሳይንቲስቱ በአንድ ወቅት ስለጉዳዩ እንዲህ ብለው ተናግረው ነበር … ‹‹ … በወቅቱ በወንዙ ላይ ልብስ ከሚያጥቡት ሰዎች ዝቅ ብሎ ስመለከት ብዙ ቀንድ አውጣዎች ሞተዋል። ይህ ዓይነቱ ሁኔታ በሌሎች ቦታዎች የለም። በሌሎች ቦታዎች ቀንድ አውጣዎቹ ሳይሞቱ እየተንሳፈፉ እንመለከታቸዋለን። ልብሳቸውን በሳሙና የሚያጥቡት ሰዎች ዘንድ ግን ብዙ አልተመለከትኩም። ሰዎቹን ልብሳቸውን በምን እንደሚያጥቡ ስጠይቃቸው በእንዶድ እንደሆነ ነገሩኝ። ‹ምናልባት እንዶድ ቀንድ አውጣዎቹን ይገድላቸው ይሆን?› ብዬ አሰብኩ። ስለእንዶድ ከዚያ በፊት ብዙም አናውቅም ነበር። ከዚያም ቀንድ አውጣዎችን ሰብስበን አምጥተን አንዷን ሴት እቃ ላይ እንዶድ እንድትጨምርበት ጠየቅኋትና እንዶዱን ጨመረችበት። እንዶዱ ያለበት እቃ ላይ ደግሞ ቀንድ አውጣዎቹን ስናስቀምጣቸው ቀንድ አውጣዎቹ ወዲያውኑ ሞቱ …››

ዶክተር አክሊሉ ዓድዋ ላይ በመገረም ስሜት የሞከሩትን ሙከራ ወደ አዲስ አበባ ከተመለሱ በኋላ በቤተ ሙከራ ለማረጋገጥ ስራቸውን ጀመሩ። እንዳሰቡትም እንዶድ የቢልሃርዚያ በሽታን የሚያስተላልፉትን ትሎች የሚሸከሙትን ቀንድ አውጣዎችን እንደሚገድል አረጋገጡ። ይህን የምርምር ማረጋገጫቸውንም ለሳይንሳዊ ጥናትና ምርምር ጉባዔ አቀረቡ።

ከዚያም ዶክተር አክሊሉ ወደ ካሊፎርኒያው ስታንፎርድ ዩኒቨርሲቲ (Stanford University) በማቅናት በእንዶድ ላይ ምርምር ማድረጋቸውን ቀጠሉ። በስታንፎርድ ዩኒቨርሲቲ ቆይታቸው እንዶድ ከቢልሃርዚያ በተጨማሪ ለሌሎች በሽታዎች መድኃኒትነትም የሚሆን ተፈጥሮና አቅም እንዳለው ወይም እንደሌለው ጥናት አድርገዋል። ከዚህ ባሻገር በሌሎች ጥገኛ ተህዋሲያን ላይ ሰፊ ምርምሮችንም አከናውነዋል።

[በነገራችን ላይ ቢልሃርዝያ (Bilharziasis) ሺስቶሶማ በሚባሉ ጥገኛ ትሎች የሚመጣ በሽታ ነው። ወንድና ሴት ትሎች ተገናኝተው በመጣበቅ የሰው ደም ውስጥ በመኖር ብዙ ሺህ እንቁላሎች ያፈራሉ። እንቁላሎቻቸው ከሽንት ጋር ሲወጡም ደም ሊያሸኑ ይችላሉ። እንቁላሎቹ ከሰገራና ከሽንት ጋር ከሰውነት ወደ ውጪ ከወጡ በኋላ ተፈልፍለው ቀንድ አውጣ ውስጥ ገብተው ይራባሉ። ከዚያም ከቀንድ አውጣው ውስጥ ወጥተው ውሃ ውስጥ በመቆየት ሰዎች ሲዋኙ ወይም በባዶ እግራቸው በውሃ ውስጥ ሲሄዱ የሰውን ቆዳ በስተው ወደ ደም ስር ይገባሉ።]

ይሁን እንጂ በርካታ ዓመታትን የፈጀው የምርምር ስራ ዓለም አቀፍ ተቀባይነትን ለማግኘት መንገዱ አልጋ በአልጋ አልሆነላቸውም ነበር። በዓለም ላይ ያሉት የእንዶድ ዝርያዎች መብዛትና ዓይነታቸውም ከቦታ ቦታ መለያየቱ ተቀባይነቱ እንዲዘገይ ምክንያት ሆነዋል።

የምርምር ሂደቱ ብዙ ውጣ ውረዶች የበዙበት እንደነበር በምርምር ስራው ሂደት ተሳታፊ የነበሩት ፕሮፌሰር ለገሰ ወልደዮሐንስ በአንድ ወቅት እንዲህ ብለው ተናግረው ነበር።

‹‹ … በተለያዩ ቦታዎች የሚበቅሉት የእንዶድ ዝርያዎች የተለያዩ መልኮችና ቀለማት አሏቸው። የመድኃኒትነትና የሳሙናነት ባህርያቸውም የተለያየ ነው። አካባቢው ልዩነት የፈጠረባቸውና ተመሳሳይ የቤተሰብ ዝርያ ያላቸው የእንዶድ ዓይነቶች ተሰብስበው የተለያዩ ሙከራዎች ተደረገባቸው። በዚህም ምክንያት በርካታ የጥናትና ምርምር ውጤቶችም ይፋ ሆኑ … ››

ዶክተር አክሊሉ የምርምር ስራቸውን ይፋ ባደረጉበት ወቅት ቁጥራቸው ቀላል የማይባሉ የውጭ አገራት ተመራማሪዎች በ‹‹ትብብር›› ሰበብ ምርምሩን እነርሱ ማከናወን እንደሚፈልጉ ገልጸው ነበር። ዶክተር አክሊሉ ምርምሩ የትም ቢካሄድ ችግር እንደሌለው ስላመኑ ለትሮፒካል እፅዋት ውጤቶች ተቋም (Tropical Plant Products Institute) ናሙና ሰጥተው የምርምር ስራቸውን ቀጠሉ።

የተቋሙ ተመራማሪዎች ግን የምርምሩ ውጤት ስለደረሰበት ደረጃ ትንፍሽ ሳይሉ ብዙ ወራት ተቆጠሩ። በዚህ ወቅት እነዶክተር አክሊሉ ግን ለቢልሃርዚያ በሽታ መድኃኒት የሚሆነው የእንዶድ ዝርያ መርዛማ ያልሆነና ለሰው ልጅ ጎጂ እንዳልሆነ የሚገልጸውን የምርምር ውጤታቸውን ጨምሮ ሌሎች ውጤቶችን በየጊዜው ይፋ ያደርጉ ነበር። ዶክተር አክሊሉም የምርምር ስራው ምን ደረጃ ላይ እንደደረሰ ለተቋሙ ጥያቄ ሲያቀርቡ ‹‹የምርምር ስራው በጥሩ ሁኔታ እየተካሄደ ነው። የምርምሩ ውጤት ከመታተሙ በፊት የፓተንት መብት (Patent Right) እንዲያገኝ ተወስኗል›› ብለው መለሱላቸው። ዶክተር አክሊሉም እርሳቸውና ወገኖቻቸው በደከሙበት ስራ ሌሎች የባለቤትነት ማረጋገጫ ማግኘታቸው ተገቢ እንዳልሆነና ልፋታቸውም መና መቅረት እንደሌለበት ስላመኑ የምርምር ስራቸው በአሜሪካ የባለቤትነት ማረጋገጫ እንዲያገኝ አደረጉ። እነዶክተር አክሊሉ በደከሙበት ስራ የባለቤትነት ማረጋገጫ አግኝተን ስማችንን እናስጠራለን ብለው ቋምጠው የነበሩትና በዚህ የተበሳጩት የውጭ አገራት ተማራማሪዎች ቀደም ሲል ሲያሞካሹት የነበረውን እንዶድ ‹‹መርዛማ ነው … የሰውን ጤና ይጎዳል … ›› እያሉ ማጣጣል ጀመሩ።

ይሁን እንጂ ለቢልሃርዚያ በሽታ መድኃኒት የሚሆነው የእንዶድ ዝርያ መርዛማ ያልሆነና ለሰው ልጅ ጎጂ እንዳልሆነ ዶክተር አክሊሉ በስታንፎርድ ዩኒቨርሲቲ ባደረጉት ጥናት አረጋገጡ። ካናዳ ውስጥ የሚገኘው ዓለም አቀፍ የልማት ጥናትና ምርምር ማዕከል (International Development Research Center)ም ለቢልሃርዚያ በሽታ መድኃኒት የሚሆነው የእንዶድ ዝርያ ለሰው ልጅ መርዛማ እንዳልሆነ የሚገልፅ የምርምር ውጤት ይፋ በማድረጉ የዶክተር አክሊሉን የምርምር ውጤት ለማጣጣል የተከፈተው የስም ማጥፋት ዘመቻ ሳይሳካ ቀረ። የመድኃኒቱ ስያሜም ‹‹ለማቶክሲን (Lemmatoxin)›› ተብሎ በስማቸው ተጠራ። ኢትዮያጵዊው ሳይንቲስት ፕሮፌሰር አክሊሉ ለማ በመላው ዓለም የሚገኙ ከ200 ሚሊዮን በላይ ሰዎችን እያሰቃየ ለነበረው ለቢልሃርዚያ በሽታ የመፍትሄ አባት ሆኑ፤የምርምር ስራቸውም ለነዚህ ሚሊዮኖች ስቃይ መድኃኒት ሆነ።

ለዚህም ነው ፕሮፌሰር አክሊሉ በአንድ ወቅት ‹‹ … በአፍሪካ ውስጥ የሚከናወኑ ሳይንሳዊ ጥናቶችና ምርምሮች መሰረታዊ መሰናክሎቻቸው የምርምር ግብዓቶችና የገንዘብ ችግሮች ብቻ ሳይሆኑ በበለፀጉ አገራት ግለሰቦችና ተቋማት ዘንድ የሚስተዋሉ የአስተሳሰብ ኢፍትሐዊነቶች እንደሆኑ ተረድተናል …›› ብለው የተናገሩት።

ፕሮፌሰር አክሊሉ ለማ የአዲስ አበባ ዩኒቨርሲቲ የሳይንስ ትምህርት ክፍል የመጀመሪያው ዲን በመሆንም አገልግለዋል። የፓቶባዮሎጂ ተቋም (Institute of Pathobiology)ን ያቋቋሙትም እርሳቸው ናቸው። ይህ ተቋም በአሁኑ ወቅት በስማቸው እንዲሰየም ተደርጎ (‹‹አክሊሉ ለማ ፓቶባዮሎጂ መታሰቢያ ኢንስቲትዩት/Aklilu Lemma Institute of Pathobiology››) መታወሻ ሆኗቸዋል። ተቋሙም በተለያዩ በሽታዎች ላይ ትኩረት ያደረጉ በርካታ የምርምር ስራዎች ይከናወኑበታል።

በእንዶድ ላይ የተከናወነው የምርምር ስራ አበርክቶው በቀላሉ የሚገመት አይደለም። ፕሮፌሰር ለገሰ ‹‹ … እንዶድ በሳሙናነቱ እናቶቻችን በቅርስነት ያቆዩት ነው። ቢልሃርዚያን በመቆጣጠር ችሎታው ከሰራናቸው ትልልቅ ተግባራት አንዱ በወንጂ አካባቢ ያከናወንነው ተግባር ነው። በአካባቢው የሚገኙ ውሃማ አካላትን በእንዶድ በማከም ከቢልሃርዚያ ነፃ ማድረግ ችለናል። በመተሃራ አካባቢም ተመሳሳይ ስራዎችን አከናውነናል›› ብለዋል።

የእነ ፕሮፌሰር አክሊሉ የምርምር ስራ ለቢልሃርዚያ በሽታ መድኃኒት በመሆን ብቻ የተገደበ አልነበረም። እንዶድ በውሃ ግድቦች ላይ ተሰባስበው በፍጥነት በመራባት በግድቦቹ ላይ ጉዳት ለሚያደርሱ የቀንድ አውጣ ዝርያዎችም ፍቱን መድኃኒት እንደሆነ በምርምራቸው ተረጋግጦ ግድቦችን ከጉዳት መታደግ ተችሏል። ይህ የእንዶድ ጥቅም በተለይ በአሜሪካ በብዙ ቦታዎች ተግባር ላይ ስለመዋሉ ፕሮፌሰር አክሊሉ ተናግረው ነበር። በዚህ ዘርፍ በተለይ ከአሜሪካው ቶሌዶ ዩኒቨርሲቲ (University of Toledo) ጋር በመተባበር በሰሩት ስራ ዩኒቨርሲቲው የአሜሪካ ፓተንት አግኝቷል።

ኢትዮጵያም የሳይንስ አካዳሚ ያስፈልጋታል በሚል ሃሳብ የኢትዮጵያ ሣይንስ አካዳሚን የማቋቋም ሃሳብን የጠነሰሱት ፕሮፌሰር አክሊሉ ለማ ነበሩ። የኢትዮጵያ ብሔራዊ የሳይንስ ጥናትና ምርምር ካውንስል (National Scientific and Technical Research Council of Ethio­pia) እንዲቋቋም ያስተባበረው ብሔራዊ ኮሚቴ ምክትል ሰብሳቢም ነበሩ። የኢትዮጵያ መንግሥት የሳይንስና ቴክኖሎጂ ዋና አማካሪ ሆነው አገልግለዋል።

ከፕሮፌሰር ለገሰ ወልደዮሐንስ ጋር በጋራ በመሆን በእንዶድ ዙሪያ የሚከናወኑ የምርምር ተግባራትን የሚያስተባብርና መቀመጫውን አዲስ አበባ ያደረገ ‹‹እንዶድ ፋውንዴሽን (Endod Foundation)›› የተባለ ማዕከል አቋቁመው የምርምር ተግባራትን አከናውነዋል።

ፕሮፌሰር አክሊሉ ለማ በተባበሩት መንግሥታት ድርጅት ውስጥም በተለያዩ ኃላፊነቶች ላይ አገልግለዋል። ከነዚህም መካከል የድርጅቱ የጤናና ልማት ቴክኖሎጂ እንዲሁም የሳይንስና ቴክኖሎጂ ልማት ማዕከል ከፍተኛ አማካሪ እና የዩኒሴፍ (UNICEF) ዓለም አቀፍ የሕፃናት ልማት ማዕከል ምክትል ዳይሬክተር ሆነው የሰሩባቸው ኃላፊነቶቻቸው ይጠቀሳሉ።

ከ1985 ዓ.ም ጀምሮ ሕይወታቸው እስካለፈበት ጊዜ ድረስ ደግሞ የዶክትሬት ዲግሪያቸውን ወደሰሩበትና ብዙ ምርምሮችን ወዳካሄዱበት ጆንስ ሆፕኪንስ ዩኒቨርሲቲ ተመልሰው፣ በዩኒቨርሲቲውና በኢትዮጵያና በኡጋንዳ ታላላቅ ዩኒቨርሲቲዎች መካከል ግንኙነት እንዲፈጠር በማድረግ ኤች አይ ቪ ኤድስን ለመቆጣጠር በሚያስችሉ አገር በቀል የጥናትና ምርምር እንዲሁም የአቅም ግንባታ ተግባራት ላይ አተኩረው ሲሰሩ ቆይተዋል።

ፕሮፌሰር አክሊሉ ለማ በርካታ ሽልማቶችን አሸንፈዋል። ለአብነት ያህል የብዙዎችን ሕይወት መታደግ ለቻለው አስደናቂው የእንዶድ ላይ የምርምር ስራቸው ከባልደረባቸው ከፕሮፌሰር ለገሰ ወልደዮሐንስ ጋር በ1982 ዓ.ም ‹‹ተለዋጭ ኖቤል (Alternative Nobel Prize)›› በመባል የሚታወቀውንና አስቸኳይ ምላሽ ለሚሹ ዓለም አቀፍ ፈተናዎች/ችግሮች ተግባራዊና ተምሳሌታዊ የሆኑ መፍትሄዎችን ላፈለቁ አካላት የሚሰጠው የ‹‹ራይት ላይቭሊሁድ ሽልማት (The Right Livelihood Award)›› ዓለም አቀፍ ሽልማት ተበርክቶላቸዋል። በ1982 ዓ.ም የተከናወነው የ‹‹የራይት ላይቭሊሁድ ሽልማት›› ለኢትዮጵያ ልዩ ነበር። በወቅቱ ሌላው ኢትዮጵያዊ ፕሮፌሰር መላኩ ወረደ የኢትዮጵያን የዘረ መል ሀብት (Genetic Wealth) በመጠበቅ ለሰሩት ስራ ሌላኛው ተሸላሚ ነበሩ። የቀዳማዊ ኃይለሥላሴ የሳይንስ ሽልማት የወርቅ ሜዳሊያም ተሸልመዋል። ከዚህ በተጨማሪም የሦስት የፓተንት መብቶች፣ የአምስት መጽሐፍትና ከ60 በላይ የሚሆኑ የጥናትና ምርምር ውጤቶች ባለቤት መሆን የቻሉ አንጋፋ ባለሙያ ነበሩ።

ፕሮፌሰር አክሊሉ በኢትዮጵያ የሚገኙ የዩኒቨርሲቲ የሳይንስና የሕክምና ትምህርት ተማሪዎች እንዲሁም ጀማሪ መምህራን እንዲበረታቱ በማሰብ በራሳቸው ገንዘብ በአክሊሉ ለማ ፋውንዴሽንና በአዲስ አበባ ዩኒቨርሲቲ ትብብር የሚተገበር ‹‹አክሊሉ ለማ የትምህርትና የምርምር ሽልማት›› የተሰኘ መርሃ ግብር አቋቁመዋል። ምንም እንኳ እርሳቸው በሕይወት ቆይተው የተቋሙን ስራ ማየት ባይችሉም፣ መርሃ ግብሩ በ1990 ዓ.ም 10 ተማሪዎችንና ተመራማሪዎችን በመሸለም ስራውን መጀመር ችሏል።

ፕሮፌሰር አክሊሉ ለማ በስራቸው ታታሪ፣ ቁጥብ፣ ጨዋ እንዲሁም ተጫዋች እንደነበሩ የሚያውቋቸው ሁሉ ይመሰክራሉ። ለ13 ዓመታት ያህል አብረው እንደሰሩ የሚናገሩት ፕሮፌሰር ለገሰ ወልደዮሐንስ ‹‹ … እጅግ በጣም ጥሩ ሰው ነበር። ምቹ ጓደኛዬ ነበር። ጥያቄ መጠየቅና መመራመር ይወዳል። አሳታፊና በትብብር መስራትን የሚወድ ሰው ነበር። ጥሩ አስተማሪና አገሩን የሚወድና ለአገሩም ትልቅ ሕልም የሰነቀ ሰው ነበር …›› በማለት ስለባልደረባቸውና ስለወዳጃቸው ተናግረዋል።

ፕሮፌሰር አክሊሉ ከባለቤታቸውና ከሦስት ልጆቻቸው ጋር ሆነው ኑሯቸውን በኢትዮጵያና በአሜሪካ አሳልፈዋል። በመላው ዓለም ለሚገኙ ለሚሊዮኖች ሕመም መድኃኒት ሆነው ደማቅ ታሪክ የፃፉት የዓለም ባለውለታ ፕሮፌሰር አክሊሉ ለማ በ1989 ዓ.ም ከዚህ ዓለም በሞት ተለይተዋል።
