ADDIS ABABA- Japan has signed a contract with Association for Women’s Sanctuary and Development (AWSAD) for the building of a shelter for victims of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Addis Ababa.
According to the press released sent to the Ethiopia Press Agency (EPA), Japan will provide funding for this initiative under the Japanese Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) up to roughly USD 145,000, or ETB 7.9 million.
As a result of AWSAD’s request for Japan’s aid, Japan has chosen to support AWSAD in owning and operating one dormitory facility and one kitchen building for shelter inhabitants through this initiative. About 100 women and children will be able to dwell in a suitable setting, which will promote their social independence, it was stated.
ITO Takako, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Ethiopia, and Maria Munir, Executive Director of the Association for Women’s Sanctuary and Development (AWSAD), signed the grant contract for “The Project for the Construction of a Shelter for Victims of GBV in Addis Ababa” at the residence of the Japanese Ambassador to Ethiopia.
Japan has implemented over 400 projects across Ethiopia since the GGP was introduced in 1989. The GGP focuses on community development through supporting needy communities in such areas as education, vocational training, access to water and sanitation, economic growth, health, food security and so forth.
