Sheger riverside project changes Addis narratives: Premier

ADDIS ABABA – Prime Minster Abiy Ahmed said that greening the river sides of the Addis Ababa is game changer in making Addis the best tourist destination and suitable for living.

Speaking at the launching of Chinese sponsored Sheger Green Project section, Prime minster Abiy said, “We will do all our best to make Addis Ababa to live up to its name – New flower.”

The Premier noted that, the river bank project proves the commitment of the government not only to plan and accumulate resources, but also to translate its plan into action.

Appreciating Chinese government’s assistance towards the project, the Premier said, the support will enable Ethiopia to keep the momentum towards greening and cleaning its capital.

The project is iconic in alluring local and international tourists into Addis Ababa with a view of creating conducive environment for visitors.

When the number of tourists increases, the value chain will also increase. It will create job opportunities for the youths. As a result, the economic wellbeing of those individuals involved in the project will be

 improved directly or indirectly.

Chinese Ambassador to Ethiopia Tan Jian for his part said that when the project is finalized- “Sheger project”- will not only be a landmark for Ethiopia; but beyond.

Abiy has set up the goal to make Ethiopia Africa’s prosperity icon, Ambassador Jian said. “And, we stand by the side of the Premier so as to realize Sheger project.”

Ethiopia is a country with an age old civilization, natural endowments, nine heritages inscribed by UNESCO and the Land of Origin. It has a glorious past and promising future.

According to him, China has been committed to support and assist the least developed countries like Ethiopia, in fighting poverty and achieving economic development.

He further noted that the project has tremendous return in many ways to Ethiopia and the capital.

The Government of China is delighted in taking part in this landmark project and the Chinese companies operating in Ethiopia are much willing to support for its successful accomplishment.

It was learnt that the 12 km section of the entire 56 kms river cleanup and rehabilitation work is being supported by the Chinese government in a grant secured earlier this year. The project will be constructed by China Communications Construction Company (CCCC). The first phase of the project is expected to be finalized by May 2020.
