Ethio-telecom cuts tariff on international calls, SMS

ADDIS ABABA- Ethio-telecom announced tariff reduction on international calls and SMS, up to 40 percent and 51percent respectively. Ethio-telcom Director General, Frehiwot Tamiru told a press conference yesterday that the reduction mainly aimed at making telecom service more affordable and satisfy subscribers.

“The recent massive domestic service tariff reduction maximized the company’s income by 40 percent.” She noted that the new tariff discount is 40 percent for all traffic destination countries in South America and 20 percent money off on 70.9 percent traffic destination countries in Europe and 99.8 percent traffic destination states in North America.

It also made 15 percent price cut for 85 percent traffic destination countries in Oceania and 98.94 percent in Asia and Middle East while it made 10 percent cut rate for 28.3 percent traffic destination African countries. Therefore, the existing price per minute Birr, is reduced for Africa from 10.29 to 9.36, for Asia and Middle East 8.63 to 7.5, North America from 8.63 to 7.19, for South America from 10.29 to 7.36, and for Islands from 23 to 8.95.

The reduction will be applicable for both mobile and fixed lines as she describes. On the related news, the company announce18 million idle mobile service numbers have been reactivated and are ready for sale. Frehiwot remarked that the numbers will come to use starting from today and previous subscribers of these idle service numbers will get priority to re-own them within a month time.

The newly introduced service ‘keep my number’ is recommended to all subscribers to retain their number for maximum of 5 years with service payment of 109 birr per year.
