Corridor Dev’t project reducing traffic accidents

ADDIS ABABA– The Road Safety and Insurance Fund Service has commended the corridor development project for its significant contribution to reducing traffic accidents in the country.

A panel discussion, organized by the Road Safety and Insurance Fund Service, was held yesterday bringing together civil society organizations, trade unions, artists, journalists, and key stakeholders to address the damage caused by traffic accidents and promote road safety.

During the discussion, the Service CEO Jemal Abaso stated that traffic accidents are a global manmade disaster that have a profound impact on families and can lead to social crises.

In 2024, approximately 3,111 people lost their lives in traffic accidents, and property worth about 4 billion Birr was damaged. However, the CEO noted that the number of fatalities has decreased significantly this fiscal year, thanks to various measures including the implementation of corridor development projects in several cities.

According to him, these projects play a vital role in reducing accidents by creating a safer environment for drivers and pedestrians through the expansion of lanes, and the development of designated walkways and intersections.

Jemal emphasized that Ethiopia also needs to amend existing regulations, enhance law enforcement, and strengthen monitoring by identifying high-risk areas in order to substantially reduce traffic accidents.

Transport and Logistics State Minister Bareo Hassen highlighted the importance of ensuring vehicle safety through rigorous supervision and commitment.

He noted that the country is implementing a green mobility strategy to promote safe and sustainable transportation. The government aims to convert 500,000 of the country’s total 1.5 million vehicles into electric vehicles (EVs).

The Road Safety and Insurance Fund Service is also undertaking various inclusive initiatives aimed at reducing traffic accidents by raising awareness across all communities, including among people with disabilities and the elderly. The expansion of the corridor development project nationwide is making a substantial contribution to improving road safety in urban areas.
