EEU’s power stability efforts yield results

ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia Electric Utility (EEU) announced that its ongoing initiatives to reduce power interruptions are showing promising results, particularly through the implementation of the “Zero-Interruption Initiative” in Addis Ababa.

Speaking to journalists yesterday, EEU Communications Executive Anwar Abrar said the initiative, launched in the capital, has demonstrated success in mitigating service disruptions. One key measure has been the removal of trees located within three meters of power lines, a major cause of electricity interruptions.

“This year, we have actively implemented the Zero-Interruption Initiative. Cutting trees close to electric poles has significantly reduced disruptions,” Anwar explained. He added that EEU is also replacing wooden poles with more durable concrete alternatives to improve the reliability and longevity of the power supply.

Despite the availability of adequate electricity in the national grid, Anwar acknowledged that power outages still affect consumers. To further address this, EEU plans to install around 4,000 new transformers in Addis Ababa and adopt modern electrification technologies to enhance service delivery.

The Addis Ababa pilot of the Zero-Interruption Initiative is expected to serve as a national model for building a stable and reliable electricity system.

In a related effort, EEU is also taking steps to offset deforestation caused by power line clearance. The Utility plans to plant 100,000 tree seedlings during the current rainy season. The reforestation campaign, with a 20 million Birr budget, is aligned with the national Green Legacy initiative and aims to replace trees removed during the operation.
