Premier expresses firm stand in safeguarding national interest

 . Most of displaced people returned home

ADDIS ABABA– Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed said that the government never tolerate any actions that put the national and people interest at risk. He also asserted the government’s full capacity in ensuring rule of law and curtailing the destructive activities of anti-peace elements that make ill attempt to control public power through unlawful means.

The Premier made the remarks yesterday while presenting his government’s annual performance report for members of the House of People’s Representatives. He stated that the government has taken unprecedented measures to widen up the political landscape by allowing people with diverse political points of view to entertain their ideas and releasing thousands with amnesty from prison.

 Despite government’s good will, some anti-peace elements, those benefited from the reform, killed their comrades and engineers of the reform in Amhara State capital Bahir Dar city in a bid to secure public power using chaos, Dr. Abiy stated.

The attempted coup in Bahir Dar aimed to topple the democratically elected government by mobilizing force for the evil acts. Hours after the killing of Amhara’s State leadership, the Ethiopian Defense Force Chief of Staff and his comrade were shot dead in Addis Ababa by the army chief’s security guard.

According to the Prime Minister, the National Defense Force and Amhara State Security Forces completely foiled the coup and inquiry teams were established to investigate the incident while the police continue to hunt the suspects that are at large.

Concerning internal displaced people, it was pointed out that 1.2 million people were displaced from homes prior to Abiy Ahmed took power in April 2018. Additional 1.1 people displaced from homes since the new administration took office, thus the total number of displaced people across the country was 2.3 million.

Dr. Abiy said that so far 2.1 million people returned to their place of birth due to the relentless efforts of federal and state governments and the figure consisted of 94 percent of the total displaced people. Consolidated efforts are underway to resettle the remaining 130,000 citizens whilst utmost priority is given to halt potential conflicts and ensure sustainable peace as well as bring the suspects before justice.
