The diplomatic relations of Ethiopia and China was officially started in 1970. Since then, for the past 50 plus years, the partnership between the two countries was smooth, strong, growing at high speed, win-win and currently developed to comprehensive strategic partnership level.
The diplomatic relation between the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the People’s Republic of China is exemplary of win-win approach and all-season diplomacy that not vary with changes. The principle of win-win approach and respecting the internal matters of each-other by the two sides helped the countries to develop their partnership continuously and to grow their mutual national interests.
The diplomatic tie between Ethiopia and China is a true example of principled diplomacy. The social, political and economic diplomacy between the two countries is growing from year to year. The countries are also working hand-in-hand to further strengthen the partnership, to grow the mutual gain from the partnership. Considering this in mind, the two countries send their higher officials for official visits at least ones in every year, to discuss on various issues of mutual concerns.
Only in 2023, Foreign Ministers of the two countries visited the other side, Foreign Minister of China visited Ethiopia on January 2023 and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Ethiopia, Demeke Mekonnen visited China this week.
During his official visit to China, Deputy PM and Foreign Minister, Demeke inaugurated the newly constructed building of Ethiopian Chancery in Beijing and discussed with higher government officials of China.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, Demeke Mekonnen and State Councilor and Minister of Foreign Affairs of China, Qin Gang have inaugurated the new Chancery building.
During the inauguration ceremony, Demeke said that the new chancery building is a concrete testimony to further strengthen Ethiopia’s diplomatic partnership with China. The longstanding relationship between Ethiopia and China laid the foundation for the profound economic, cultural, and people-to-people relations between the two friendly countries, he added.
Demeke is optimistic to see strong cooperation between Ethiopia and China to stand together on bilateral, regional and multilateral platforms to enhance the mutual benefits of the two countries.
For his part, China’s Foreign Minister Qin Gang said during the inauguration ceremony that the construction of the new embassy of Ethiopia here in Beijing will further strengthen the relationship between Ethiopia and China.
Meanwhile, Tefera Derbew, Ethiopia’s Ambassador to China during the event said that the construction of the new embassy building is a monument of friendship between Ethiopia and China.
