UN, WHO must stop the DG’s misuse of position

The WHO is indeed well informed on the atrocities, murders and demolishing and lootings that terrorist TPLF has been conducting on health facilities in Amhara and Afar regions.

According to a comprehensive report issued by the Ministry of Health in September 2021, the ministry noted more than 1,500 health facilities have been severely damaged in Amhara and Afar states in a deliberate attack on health care, following the territorial gains made by the rebel Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) in the regions a few months ago.

The Ethiopian Minister of Health, Dr. Lia Tadesse, said in a press statement on Monday that 20 hospitals and 277 health centers were practically made nonfunctional in the Amhara region alone.

In addition, 14 hospitals, 153 health centers and 642 health posts had been looted in the Amhara region, she said.

In many health facilities, teams found destroyed equipment, doors and windows partially or wholly shattered, and medicine and patients’ files were scattered across the office, the Minister said.

In Afar State, a hospital, 10 health centers and 38 health posts were vandalized, she said. As a result, it is said that millions of people in the regions are being denied access to basic health care.

As the Director General of WHO, it is obvious that the report from the Ministry of Health has reached his report. However, as he was busy conspiring on his own country and running around to solicit support for the terrorist organization in whose leadership he is Dr. Tedros never cared when his own citizens are suffering from the damages that his organization has done. It even appears that he has Okayed it. What therefore is the fundamental reason of indifference from the WHO and what conclusions can be made from this?

In the first place, the WHO follows a double standard on the entire situation. Second as repeatedly stressed by the Government of Ethiopia, the Director General, in gross violation of the fundamental ethical standards of medical profession and in defiance too the mandate of the WHO, he was devoting most of his time not for the tasks to which he was entrusted but to misinforming, confusing and manipulating the real heath challenge brought by terrorist TPLF. He has continued to use his position not only for misinforming the world about the reality on health conditions in Ethiopia but also to doing his best to prevent the international community to gather support materials for victims in Amhara and Afar regions.

Notably, during the same period, the MOH and the interim government of Tigray restored essential health services in 52 per centof the health facilities, 63per centof the hospitals and 52per centof the health centers in areas that were considered safe from TPLF attacks. In addition, the MOH implemented several intervention measures in support of victims of gender-based violence, in such places as Axum, Adigrat, Shire, Adwa and Wukuro.

As if nothing has happened and Dr. Tedros has done excellent job on completely siding with a terrorist organization, the WHO has reelected him to allow him to use his office for coordinating a propaganda war on Ethiopia. Such reelection process by the WHO indicates several important points that should be considered if this global organization focuses on sticking on its mandate.

In the first place the WHO is not a political organization and should therefore focus on global health issues of extreme importance. Second, WHO should not allow use of its facilities and office to conduct political campaigns on member nations. Third, this global organization should act in the most impartial manner when it comes to its services to victims of health hazards across the world.

The people and Government of Ethiopia will never forget the shameful betrayal that the WHO has done on a member country of the UN in completely reelecting a Director General that has supported, coordinated and propagandized on one of the greatest health hazards that Ethiopia has ever faced. Twitting on the reelection, Alstair Thompson said “This WHO reelection will go down in history as one of the lowest points in the UN system.”

Yes, the WHO ignored Ethiopia’s formal request for investigation into what its Director General is doing siding with a leading member of a terrorist organization.

The WHO is gradually losing its credibility just like other UN systems primarily because the global organization is being used as a forum for the western powers to put political pressure on countries that refuse to obey the dictates of the major powers in the western hemisphere.

Despite all the double standards that the UN and its systems are pursuing on Ethiopia, the people and government of Ethiopia will continue to contribute their share in the lofty goals for which the UN is established. However, the UN needs to prove effectively that it is a global organization that will continue to serve humanity based on international law and the Charter of the UN.

The UN is expected to act in accordance to the expectations of the member countries instead of falling prey to few western countries who wish to dominate the world.
