Ethiopia, Russia ink nuclear deal

ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia and Russia signed a nuclear development roadmap deal, which allows Ethiopia to use nuclear power as an alternative renewable energy source, Ministry of innovation and Technology disclosed.

According to Eng. Getahun Mekuria, Ethiopia’s Innovation and Technology Minister, the nuclear application roadmap signed between the two countries will also enable Ethiopia to use nuclear technology in agriculture, health and the manufacturing sector.

The Minister especially pointed out the benefit the signing can yield in regards to modernizing the health sector, and advancing surgery in the country. He also mentioned the need for Ethiopia to move past being dependant on rain as a single energy source, if the country wants to build big industries, saying: “We will turn to using mixture of energy sources.”

Ethiopia’s Innovation and Technology Minister Eng. Getahun Mekuria and Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation Director General Rosatom Alexei Likhachev signed the deal on Monday at the 11th International Forum ATOMEXPO 2019, taking place on April 15 – 16 in Sochi, Russia on behalf of their respective countries.

In a message he sent to the participants of the Expo, President Vladmir Putin of Russia said that the forum will be a constructive event that will help to solve advanced problems of the national and global nuclear industry,” President Putin said.

It was learnt the 11th International Forum ATOMEXPO, dedicated to advance nuclear technologies’ contribution to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
