Int’l community believes Ethiopia’s elections positive impact across Horn

ADDIS ABABA – International community has now fully understood the irreplaceable role of the upcoming 6th general elections in bringing about lasting peace and stability in Ethiopia and the Horn region as a whole, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) Spokesperson said.

The spokesperson Ambassador Dina Mufti told The Ethiopian Herald that the U.S. Department of State and EU Election Commission have recently expressed support to Ethiopia’s commitment towards conducting free , fair and peaceful general elections.

“Ethiopia is capable of holding credible elections and now it is clear to all that the elections would be conducted without internal and external pressures.” Amb.Dina said that MoFA has been successful in terms of establishing clear  communication and clarifying the ambiguity created regarding the 6th general elections. “The whole world has acknowledged Ethiopia’s role in strengthening the ongoing peace building efforts across the Horn of Africa.”

He , moreover, said that Ethiopia’s 6th general elections will be credible one so long as it fulfills all the preconditions of credible election apart from addressing the nation’s quest for democracy. The general elections are expected to lay the foundation for a democratic and accountable political order and establish a socio-political contract between the electorate and the government, MoFA said.

It was noted that the upcoming Ethiopian general elections are going to be conducted in the context of socio-economic and political reforms as well as shaping and preparing to implement a home grown ten-year national economic plan. As to MoFA, the electoral process is well underway with a surge in voter turnouts; observers from international and domestic institutions are finalizing their preparations to undertake their responsibilities.

Although the EU has announced the cancellation of its plan to deploy election observing mission, it has decided to send experts’ mission. The observers are expected to follow guidelines to carry out their duties as laid out by proper institutions in Ethiopia, it was learnt.

The right to elect candidates whom the electorate believe would transform the socio-political conditions of the country rests on the general public, Amb. Dina said. United States Department of State Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor (DRL) has recently expressed support to a successful completion of the elections in Ethiopia through raising fund of up to 1 million USD.
