Livestock center transforms displaced farmers’ livelihoods

  • Produces 1000 liters of milkper day

ADDIS ABABA– The recently established Kality Livestock Center is producing about 1,000 liters of milk per day, the Addis Ababa Farmers and Urban Agriculture Development Commission announced.

Speaking to the Ethiopian Press Agency (EPA), the Commissioner, BayuShigutie, said that the center has created about 600 permanent jobs.

The center, which was established to reorganize farmers who had been displaced due to development projects, is producing between 900 and 1,000 liters of milk per day. “The center is enabling rehabilitated farmers to continue their normal agricultural activities with even improved systems addressing their challenges,” Bayu said.

The Commissioner also noted that the center is now serving farmers beyond rehabilitation. Farmers have been provided with market linkages. Now, the Commission is planning to transform the center into a breeding center over time. This will play a key role in increasing milk production, he highlighted.

The primary goal of transforming it into a breeding center is to breed highly productive dairy cattle. Accordingly, the Commission is searching for improved breeds from livestock research centers, according to him.

The Commissioner also mentioned that there are over 35,000 chickens at the center, producing 35,000 eggs daily and one million eggs monthly.

Additionally, retail shops have been constructed near the center and around the Kazanchis area of the city, where one egg is sold at 10 birr, a significant discount from the market price. The center also plans to expand distribution points to other parts of the city in the near future, he said.
