A week of national, religious celebrations

The nation celebrates the 14th GERD anniversary, PM Abiy’s inaugural day.

Ethiopians are starting to celebrate April 2, a historic day that marked the commencement of the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) 14 years ago and the 7th inaugural day of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD).

To celebrate these historic national events, marked on April 2 or Megabit 24 in the Ethiopian calendar, people started commemorating the day early by organizing different events across the country.

The day is commemorated through different sports activities and by celebrating the socio-economic and political successes achieved through the national reform, implemented following the coming to power of PM Abiy. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed came to power in April 2018, and the construction of GERD was commenced in April 2011.

-Sidama celebrates Fiche Chambalala, UNESCO-inscribed festival

Sidama Regional State celebrates Fiche Chambalala, Sidama People’s New Year, inscribed by UNESCO as the representative list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2015.

The festival was attended by tens of thousands of celebrants gathered from across Sidama and other parts of the country. Fiche Chambalala festival is mainly celebrated at the Sidama capital Hawassa, in Soresa Gudumale.

The UNESCO-registered New Year festival was marked by traditional rituals, music, dance, and communal feasts, reflecting Sidama’s rich cultural heritage and unity. The festival is celebrated as a reflection of Ethiopia’s rich cultural diversity and communal spirit.

-Happy 1446th Eid al-Fitr!

The Ethiopian Herald wishes to all Ethiopian Muslims a happy and blessed 1446th Eid al-Fitr festival.

Millions of Ethiopian Muslims gather in places set to observe Eid prayers annually, and this year’s 1446th Eid al-Fitr prayers are expected, as usual, to be attended by tens of millions of Muslims across the country.

If the crescent moon is sighted on Saturday, March 29, the 1446th Eid al-Fitr will be celebrated on March 30, 2025. Otherwise, it will occur tomorrow, on March 31.
