Disaster policy instrumental in mitigating, responding to calamities

ADDIS ABABA – The Disaster Risk Management Policy will enable the nation to mitigate and respond to natural and manmade calamities with own resources, according to the Disaster Risk Management Commission (DRMC).

Officials of the commission have briefed today HPR Foreign Relations and Peace Affairs Standing Committee members on the policy and the draft bill for the structure and operations of the commission at the African Leadership Excellence Academy.

DRM Commissioner Shiferaw Tekelemarian (PhD) recalled on the occasion that the Disaster Risk Management Policy was ratified in February 2024.

Following the ratification of the policy, a bill on the structure and operations of the commission has been drafted.

DRM Program Coordination and Implementation Deputy Commissioner, Nesibu Yasin presented a discussion paper on the content of the policy.

He recalled that Ethiopia followed donor driven disaster risk management response in the past years.

In his presentation, the deputy commissioner underscored the importance of preparing and implementing a disaster risk management policy that would enable the country to rid of foreign dependence.

According to him, the policy was crafted with due consideration to national and international realities.

The policy has also indicated how to effectively respond to natural and manmade calamities by relaying on locally generated resources.

The deputy commissioner added that the policy document is instrumental in enabling the country to effectively mitigate natural and manmade calamities by developing locally generated resources by 2030.

Standing Committee for Foreign Relations and Peace Affairs Chair, Dima Nogo (PhD) and DRM Commissioner Shiferaw Tekelemarian (PhD) as well as officials of the commission and members of the committee were in attendance at the briefing and discussion sessions, ENA reported.
