Public enterprises grab timely attention: PEHA

ADAMA – Public Enterprises Holding and Administration (PEHA) has prioritized modernizing, making profitable, and enhancing the competence of public enterprises to help the nation benefit from various sectors as it deserves.

Speaking at a forum organized to discuss the annual performance of public enterprises, PEHA Director General Habtamu Hailemichael emphasized that addressing gaps in the operations of various public enterprises is now a key focus. This effort aims to enable these enterprises to overcome challenges and contribute to meaningful national change.

Habtamu noted that numerous reforms have been implemented across many public enterprises to identify and rectify shortcomings, making them proficient and lucrative. “Public enterprises play a crucial role in creating job opportunities, securing foreign currency, and competing with international counterparts. However, much remains to be done to achieve the desired change,” he said.

He further explained that closely examining drawbacks, discussing key concerns, and devising solutions are essential to leading the nation effectively and bringing about comprehensive change.

According to Habtamu, support from France Public Enterprise and the House of People’s Representatives has been instrumental in promoting PEHA’s member enterprises. Public enterprises are working hard to promote job creation, expand corporate social responsibility, and generate foreign currency.

Development Bank of Ethiopia President Yohannes Ayalew (PhD) added that the bank, as a policy bank, primarily finances investment and agriculture sectors. “Ethiopia’s economy currently shows a significant demand for investment, particularly in the manufacturing sector. Small and Micro Enterprises (SMEs) have also greatly contributed to the national economy and job creation, despite existing challenges,” he said.

Yohannes noted that various sectors, especially lease financing, have shown remarkable progress, although there is still a long way to go to achieve significant national improvements.
