Ethiopia’s neutrality position changing conflicts to opportunities in the Horn: MoFA

ADDIS ABABA – Through its unwavering stance of neutrality in foreign relations, Ethiopia has managed to change political differences for positive changes than destruction in the Horn of Africa, State Minister of Foreign Affairs Hirut Zemene said.

State Minister Hirut discussed with Julian Riley, the United Kingdom Foreign and Common Wealth Office special envoy for the Red Sea and the Horn of Africa here in Addis Ababa Thursday, according to MoFA press release sent to The Ethiopian Herald.

During the discussion, Hirut disclosed that Ethiopia is working for the stability and peace of the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea and changing political differences among and within states for positive changes.

Hirut reiterated that in addition to maintaining peace and stability of the region, Ethiopia is mediating and working with mediation partners to solve conflicts and disputes peacefully in the Horn.

The unchanged age-old neutrality position in the internal affairs of countries has helped Ethiopia to be trustworthy by the governments and opposition parties of neighboring countries. Adding that working jointly with African Union and Inter Governmental Authority for Development (IGAD) is also key for the success of mediating negotiations.

Riley appreciated Ethiopia’s efforts in stabilizing the region. The special envoy stated that Ethiopia’s role for the agreement reached in Sudan and strengthening Somalia with its strong principles make the country key state in the Red Sea region.

He calls to strengthen the efforts of Ethiopia for sustainable collective prosperity of the region and assured that the government of UK will provide necessary supports.
