Ministry underscores best practice expansion

The best practices with regard to animal breeding and fishing that have been witnessed in the Southern Nations and Nationalities State have to be well developed and replicated to other parts of the nation, noted the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA).

According to Adamu Assefa, Ministry Public Relations and Communication Director, the best practices which are practically applied at Kedida Gamila worda, Kembata Tembaro Zone of the State should be extended to the other parts of the country. This could be realized by the combined effort of the state’s Animal and Fish Resource Agency and the Ministry of Agriculture, Adamu added.

The best practice pertaining to animal farming has been applied by National State’s Animal and Fish Resource Agency and Areca Research Center since 2016.

‘‘The operation began by using a small jigsaw puzzle of interbreeding the Elephantiasis wooden Desho and Guatemala’s divot. Then, it was applied on half hectare arid lands. The new breed was allowed to grow for four months. It tangibly helped farmers gain products.

Thenceforth, the farmers began to supply the new foliage to market meeting their own dire demands. The trend created clicking between the farmers and the National State Animal and Fish Resource Agency,’’ he said.

Adamu noted that, in 2017, the operation was kick started with supplying seeds, wooden twigs and foliage by the agency of the National State. That year the National State has managed to gain above 3 million Birr thanks to the effort of the Woreda.

In scaling up this practice of the state all over the country, Ethiopia could better supply animals and animal products like milk, meat, egg, among others that cater to the consumption demand of the public as well as market demand, according to him.

The director stressed that this action also could create a lot of job opportunities for youths of the country further than self-sustaining in job and income level of owners and the employees.
