Forest not a luxury for Ethiopia: Premier

• Mayor urges residents to actively participate on Monday’s tree plantation

ADDIS ABABA- Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed called on the public to participate in the tree plantation to make sure that the future generation doesn’t inherit desert and drought. The Premier further stated that that forest is not a luxury for Ethiopia , as the peoples source of survival, culture and economy depends on the size of forest coverage.

During his message released yesterday on the green legacy day of planting 200 million seedlings in a day, Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed said that Ethiopia’s sources of foreign currency earning are interconnected with the dense forest. “Deforestation has damaged our cultural values by destroying tree where traditional reconciliation, dialogue, discussion and storytelling are held under.”

Deputy Mayor of Addis Ababa City Administration Engineer Takele Uma on his part has called on residents to actively participate in the tree plantation on Monday. During a campaign at Millennium Hall yesterday Engineer Takele indicated that the government has finalized all the necessary preparations for the plantation.

He further pointed out that everyone has a responsibility to keep a green and suitable city for the coming generation. He called on the metropolitans to actively participate on Monday’s tree plantation and leave a green legacy.

Briefing the Press Thursday, Head of Press Secretariat with the Mayor’s Office Feven Teshome stated that all preparations are finalized to plant three million seedlings in a day in Addis Ababa.

Helen stated that the City Administration finalized all preparations for the green legacy day where the country planned to break a world record and becoming world greenery champion by planting 200 million seedlings in a day.

According to the Press Secretariat the city selected over 400 sites, prepared a site for the diplomatic society, over 2.8 million halls prepared by mobilizing youths of the city from all 116 woredas.

Meanwhile a task force was established by the city to manage the activities and works of the day, over 100 thousand volunteer youths are ready to facilitate and coordinate the plantation, Feven noted adding that the City is also transporting the seedlings to the selected sites.
