EIASC calls for voters’ active participation

ADDIS ABABA – The Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council (EIASC) in its third year 3rd emergency meeting, called upon voters of the Ulema, representatives of Muslim community at all Islamic Council levels, to actively participate in the coming election scheduled for August.

The Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council (EIASC), in its third emergency meeting, urged Ulema voters and Islamic Council representatives to actively participate in the upcoming August leadership election.

Speaking at the emergency meeting, EIASC’sPresident Sheikh Haji Ibrahim Tufa said the Council is expected to make historic decisions regarding the leadership structure of Ethiopia’s highest Islamic institution.

The EIASC’s executive election board has been diligently preparing for the vote amid persistent challenges that require strong leadership. “The quality of leaders to resolve existing problems should be approved by the majority,” he said.

The election will select Council representatives from the local to the federal level.

“For every fault, the Supreme Council had been accused of maladministration. Whoever rules the federal structure, the local-level Islamic structures cannot be fair and responsible until a responsible body is elected by the community.

This election, more than anything, is expected to create the ground to elect capable leaders. So, the federal-level structure will have a supportive role in addressing local problems,” he remarked.

The President also emphasized that the election is part of a broader reform process.

Beyond the vote, discussions leading to pivotal decisions will take place, he added, noting that strengthening the institution’s effectiveness and its representative role in both religious and social spheres will be a key task for the newly elected Council.

The assembly also evaluated the performance of the recently established executive election board.
