Pros, cons of power dams

The development of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam can offer Ethiopia with special advantages. The construction of its wide transmission system will enable industries to prosper by creating necessary power and providing skilled jobs, thereby retaining young people and sustaining a society with a complete cross section of jobs and income levels.

Hydro-production will also fund the spread of transmission capacity into the glens and farms to be connected to electricity. This will eventually bring farmers with electric lighting, a fundamental improvement in the rural area where the winter nights are long.

Dams are important because they provide water for domestic, industry and irrigation purposes. Dams often also provide hydroelectric power production and river navigation. Domestic use includes everyday activities such as water for drinking, cooking, bathing, washing, and lawn and garden watering. Dams can be useful for a variety of reasons such as supplying water for irrigation, municipal water, flood control, hydroelectric power generation, and river navigation among others.

Dams can provide the benefit of protection from rivers flooding in two ways, either by direct protection or by routing the flood through a reservoir providing other means thus reducing the peak flow in the river downstream of it. For example, in China, The Three Gorges Dam provides flood protection to the 15 million people who now live in the flood plain, converting what used to be agricultural or development land.

This has been achieved by constructing dams, called sea defenses, to keep out the sea. A good example is the sea defenses in the wash  to protect the highly productive fens from being inundated.

These sea defenses have provided extra land for housing and industrial development particularly for installations needing connection to the sea such as refineries. During times of excess water flow, dams store water in the reservoir; then they release water during times of low flow, when natural flows are inadequate to meet water demand.

When engineers design and maintain dams, they consider all the purposes such as not enough water for people during the summer droughts, farmers have trouble growing food without enough irrigation water and during drought periods, rivers are not deep enough for ships to cross.

A dam is built to control water through placement of a blockage of earth, rock and/or concrete across a stream or river. Dams are usually constructed to store water in a reservoir, which is then used for a variety of applications such as irrigation and municipal water supplies. Reservoir water can also be directed to flow through hydraulic turbines, producing electric power for use in homes and industries.

Hydroelectric power is considered a renewable source of energy because the reservoir water that is used to generate electricity is continuously replenished. A dam using locks and canals, such as the series of locks on the Panama Canal, enables navigation through a human-made water route that must overcome elevation differences. However, it should be noted that there are few disadvantages of Dam construction.

The disadvantages of dams include the resulting flooding of large areas of land destroying flora and fauna, upstream flooding that destroys animals, plants, ecosystems and private property; downstream alteration of terrain, ecosystems, plants and wildlife; impeding fish migration, and killing large numbers of fish that pass through hydroelectric turbines.

In recent years, engineers and scientists have begun to manage reservoirs and their releases to be less harmful to aquatic and terrestrial wildlife and plants, as well as humans residing below the dam—a method of water resource management called adaptive management.

The building of the dam is not an easy task. It entails a combination of many things. Most importantly, it needs millions of dollars that will be generated primarily from the people at large and if possible from external funding both in terms of borrowing and/or assistance; however, there are always impediments with regard to external funding or outside finance and at times, those impediments can become total obstacles as well. However, the Ethiopian people are quite confident of overcoming any and every obstacles that may exist because they are quite sure that their dream can become a reality.

 The Ethiopian people are using their resources, energy, finance and manpower, technical and technological knowledge and depending upon themselves to construct this grand hydro-electric power dam once and for all. As a result, they are responding positively and delightfully in unprecedented and extraordinary manner here at home and abroad. They are feeling very proud of themselves and are becoming more and more resilient of any obstacles that may come on the way and becoming more and more confident of making the dream a reality.

The Dam is now 70 percent complete and the job goes on twenty four hours nonstop. As it is now nearing to completion, Ethiopians are currently not only seeing the light at the end of the tunnel but indeed getting closer and closer to touch the light at the end of the tunnel.

Once completed, the Dam will make significant contribution towards the overall betterment of lives and livelihoods of the public at large here back home and will also assist neighboring countries by providing them low cost power energy much needed for their overall developmental endeavors.

The Ethiopian people are now living and breathing the Dam. The Dam has now become an expression of greatness, dignity, self confidence and pride of the Ethiopian people. In fact, it has physiological bearings, a burning conviction and a unifying spirit amongst the people that it has now become a way of life to all Ethiopians from coast to coast. It demonstrates confidence, self respect and commitment.

 It is the way forward for greatness of our nation and our people. The public at large believes that the Dam is their future and the future of their children and grand children; therefore, they want to stand on guard for it and they are determined more than ever to continue supporting its construction in every way, shape or form until they see its completion.

Once completed, our dam will have a mesmerizing impact on the nation and abroad and Ethiopians will be proud of themselves and their accomplishment. Our ancestors made us proud among others by securing our sovereignty and by defeating and driving away foreign aggressors at the battle of Adwa. By doing so, they made history for themselves. Now, this generation has the opportunity to make history.

Here is the chance of a life time that must not be missed and that everyone must contribute supporting the construction of the Dam in any way. It is therefore time for this generation to make history for themselves, their children and their grand children. It is now history in the making for all Ethiopians and friends and allies of Ethiopia. What a chance! What an opportunity! No one should let it go; everyone must act and must act right now.

Ethiopians feel that this grand project is the base and cornerstone for greatness and prosperity of our people and our nation as it will scale up and lift up the developmental endeavors of our people and our nation, it is a sign and symbol of unity of the Ethiopian Nations, Nationalities and Peoples because the impact of this grand project is varied and enormous. It will among others generate massive amount of electric power that will be used here at home and abroad.

 The work has to continue with the highest tenacity and vigor in order to finish what we have done already. There is no turning back; the only way to go is to go forward and finish the job. For that, all Ethiopians from within and abroad: the Diaspora community has to join hands to enhance and complete the construction of this Grand National Project. This project will among others bring about socio-economic and political leverage and pride to our people and to our nation.

Here, we all must thank all the good men and women working at the site who possess the trade mark of commitment, hard work, courage and perseverance. While enduring very hard climatic conditions, they are doing an excellent job with no hesitation and with no complaint. They work day in and day out with joy and jubilation. They are our heroes and heroines and we owe them a lot.
