ADDIS ABABA – Having adopted migrant guidelines aimed to tackle illegal and informal migration, the government has been easing labor migration processes, so disclosed Ministry of Labor and Skills (MoLS).

In a recent press briefing, MoLS Minister Muferiat Kamil said that the government has reformed its migration governance apart from preparing guideline to teach labor migrants’ responsibilities and rights.

According to the reformed labor migration guidance, migrants have to be trained on basic digital literacy, and service delivery.

“Labor migration to Middle East and all other countries needs to be done legally. Formal procedures using digital platforms have already been installed. So migrants can access applications and procedures to migrate for job through digital means,” she indicated.

It was learnt that labor migration of Ethiopia was dominated by agents and illegal human traffickers. The role of the government on this issue was little. Due to this, large number of migrants faced challenges. In this regard, the adopted guideline would avoid illegal and informal brokers who are causing migration challenge.

Moreover, hosting countries are paying various salaries for same jobs only based on nationality of migrants. The government of Ethiopia is negotiating with hosting countries to resolve this unjust salary. And trainings to produce skilled and competitive labor force are being delivered, the minister noted.

“Migrants are Ethiopia’s labor diplomats. If they are good in providing service, hosting countries will pay great tribute to Ethiopia.”

Speaking about rehabilitation of returned migrants, Muferiat said that the government has been supporting retuned migrants to start their own business.
