ADDIS ABABA – Ethio Telecom CEO Frehiwot Tamiru has reaffirmed that the Digital Ethiopia initiative is not just a technological upgrade but a national transformation agenda aimed at creating a simplified, connected, and inclusive society.
Speaking at a ceremony where the company awarded modern BYD electric cars and three-wheeled vehicles to winners from Addis Ababa and Adama, part of its 130th anniversary celebration, Frehiwot emphasized that the core mission of Digital Ethiopia goes beyond service delivery—it is about solving real societal challenges and building long-term digital equity.
“Digital Ethiopia is about more than access. It’s about integrating daily services—from education to entertainment—and shaping a digital lifestyle for all Ethiopians,” she said.
She underscored that inclusivity remains a top priority. “If we hadn’t built a digital ecosystem, only a few would have benefited. That’s why our efforts are focused on creating platforms that reach everyone, regardless of their background or education level.”
Ethio Telecom’s flagship mobile money platform, Tele Birr, has become a cornerstone of this inclusive digital vision. By registering with the service, users gain access to a wide array of telecom, government, and private sector services—all aimed at increasing efficiency and accessibility in daily life.
Frehiwot noted that Ethio Telecom’s vision is rooted not in selling airtime or data packages but in being a key enabler of national progress. “Our purpose is to solve real problems. When we launch digital campaigns or competitions, they’re not just games—they’re tools to create awareness and promote a deeper digital culture.”
She also highlighted the importance of collaboration in realizing the vision of a digitally empowered Ethiopia. “We cannot achieve this alone. Building a digital future requires cooperation from all sectors—public, private, and civil society.”
Ethio Telecom continues to invest heavily in expanding its infrastructure and digital services, while at the same time working to bridge the digital divide through awareness campaigns and partnerships. The company’s leadership believes that through Digital Ethiopia, the nation can leapfrog into a future where technology serves not just the connected few, but the entire population.
