ADDIS ABABA- Ethiopian Shipping and Logistic Service Enterprise (ESLSE) says it is taking several activities to modernize and expand logistics service in the country.
During the opening of annual meeting yesterday, Roba Megersa, Chief Executive Officer of ESLSE said that various activities are underway on shipping and logistic service to facilitate the transportation system of the nation.
According to Roba, updating system, machinery, management system, and modern human resources are some serious measures of the Enterprise taken especially during the past one year. It is playing decisive role in order to gain competitiveness and being strategic. Particularly, modernizing machine is playing significant role to reduce number of days for cargo staying in cargo area from 10 to one day.
World Bank spent 150 million USD budget allocated to Mojjo town in order to create big logistic and trade town while the budget perhaps increase to 300 million USD in the upcoming year. To facilitate the service more, Mojjo dry port link to railway. Currently, the Enterprise close to 69 million USD budget allocated for Dire Dawa city new dry port building. The same is true in Kombolcha town and woreda town, in Amhara state.
Dagmawit Moges, Minister of Transport on her part said that the government of Ethiopia has merged three state logistic companies and established ESLSE. However, Ethiopia has one of the lowest annual logistic performances which registered a rank of 116 out of 126 countries in 2016. This shows that the country has challenged in the aspect of logistic system.
After this weak work performance, the country has developed the national logistic strategy to enhance the country’s international trade, competitiveness, and help economic development while the strategy approved by the government. Currently, the country uses multimodal transport in seven dry ports.
