Parliament endorses electoral board members, court judges

 . Approves proclamations

 ADDIS ABABA-The House of Peoples Representatives endorsed yesterday the appointments of new members of National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) in sweeping majority votes with 17 oppositions and one abstention.

The endorsed members, nominated by Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed, were presented to parliament through government whip. The members are Bezuwerk Ketete, Wubeshet Ayele, Dr. Getahun Kasa and Abera Degefa. Webeshet is also elected as Deputy Chairperson of NEBE and Bertukan Medekesa continues as Chairperson of the Board.

It was reported that the members are qualified and fit for the appointments while some MPs raised the issue of ethnic representations and other concerns that sparked heated debate. Mps also expressed their concern on the number of the appointed members arguing it could be inadequate compared to the large number of political parties.

Meanwhile, the parliament also approved the appointments of Federal Supreme judges and President and vice presidents of the Federal High and First Instance Courts. Berhanemesekel Wagari has been elected as President of the Federal High Court while Tenagne Tilahun and Teklit Yemsel have been appointed to serve as vice presidents of the court.

Fuad Kiyar has also been picked as President of the Federal First Instance Court and Ashenefech Abebe and Tesfaye Neway have been chosen to serve as vice presidents. The parliament also approved the appointments of 15 judges for the Federal Supreme Court. The endorsements have been opposed by one Mp and abstained by 10 MPs

Also , the House approved a draft bill for the establishment of Communication Service Authority. The Authority would be responsible for regulating telecommunication services which is set to be privatized. Moreover, the house also endorsed the amendment of proclamation for the establishment of Federal General Auditor. It also approved a Proclamation to provide for the amendment of Banking Business. The proclamation would give greater rights for Ethiopian diasporas with regard to ownership.
