Ten mln. youths to participate in summer voluntary works: Ministry

 ADDIS ABABA – Ten million youths will participate in various types of volunteer activities in summer voluntary works announced Ministry of Women, Child and Youth.

Bekele Dehne, Senior Officer of Voluntary Works with the Ministry said that the Ministry along with stakeholders and youths organizations has planned to involve ten million youths on voluntary works.

He noted that the program apart from enabling execute a range of development works, has advantage to creating responsible generation. As to him the volunteers will participate on environmental protection, humanitarian activity – blood donation, counseling, tutorial programs and others.

He underscored that volunteerism has been developing significantly throughout the country due to government’s especial attention to the program, encouraging supports that have been provided by the Ministry and positive attitudes of youths towards the program.

He noted that until now the country has no voluntary work policy, but currently it has drafted a policy on the program. Lidya Embakom Ministry’s Voluntary Work Officer on her part said that volunteerism has a great advantage to carryout various development activities and assist needy people.

She noted that the participation of higher government officials including the Premier on voluntary service would have a great opportunity to encourage volunteerism in the country. She underscored that in addition to government institutions NGO also has be taking part through giving training for coordinators of the program.

The media should also support the program through creating awareness about it and providing more coverage than before.
