Ministry to launch E- Service in 150 offices

ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia is planning to launch e- government service delivery on 150 governments’ services in the upcoming six months, says Ministry of Innovation and Technology (MInT).

According to the report, the Plan envisages to provide fast service delivery to citizens and to apply it in the areas of more than 300 government services.

The ministry report indicates that six public institutions including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) have already started offering electronic service delivery. MoFA Spokesperson Nebyat Getachew told The Ethiopian Herald that delivering government services through electronic systems enables clients to access its service easily and giving the proper service for the clients. Especially our embassies are providing visa services of applicants’ via electronics.

Due to its accessibility in terms of delivering the right service at the right time it is really an excellent opportunity for the ministry to provide a better service and the clients have been quite positive for their response, he added.

The report further indicates that, each government structure including at Kebele level, will start offering services electronically for its society.

“We are planning to offer consistent and sustainable services, by providing the services to clients rather than making citizens to go to the services,” said Getahun Mekuria, Minister of Innovation and Technology (MInT).

Product and Service Marketing Director at Ethio Telecom Muluken Gizaw, told The Ethiopian Herald that electronic services enable clients to access the service without reaching to the place easily using electronic devices only. As illustration people can purchase, sale, pay or order things online.

He also added that delivering electronic services helps users and the providers in order to save time. More over e-services will encourage the economy. Ethio Telecome is one of the institutions that is being benefited by delivering E-service. Yimulu , an online air time recharging services is one of the e-services being provided by Ethio Telecom. Everyone can buy air time for his/her mobile online or from any other proxy shops without buying a card.

Incomplete infrastructure is cited as a challenge to the plan but the minister said that the government is working on accessibility of better speed internet service in all regions.
