•Inaugurates monument of Dr. Catherine Hamlin, husband
ADDIS ABABA- Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed says Dr. Catherine Hamlin, founder of the Hamlin Fistula Hospial, has given Ethiopians a lesson that goes beyond ethnicity, color and sex.
The premier made the remarks when he visited Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia Hospital yesterday. The premier has inaugurated the pioneers’ monument of Dr. Catherine Hamlin and her late husband and cofounder of the hospital, Dr. Reginald Hamlin.
PM Abiy and First Lady Zinash Tayachew paid the visit to the hospital in connection with its 60th anniversary. Prime Minister Abiy commended Dr. Catherine Hamlin for her tremendous work of restoring the dignity of Ethiopian women affected by Obstetric fistula.
He expressed his heartfelt appreciation for fistula victims who are usually marginalized by their family and community. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed also bestowed an award to Dr. Catherine Hamlin on behalf of the Government of Ethiopia for her tireless contribution.
PM Abiy said, “Dr. Hamlin is a lucky woman who knows why she was born for.” Dr. Hamlin is a heroine, because she gave us lesson beyond ethnicity, color and sex. She gives priority for humanity and taught us how to be compassionate for those who are suffering, the premier stated.
Dr. Abiy said that, Dr. Hamlin and her husband gave us a lifelong lesson that heroism is saving human life, feeling humanity, and standing by the side of the marginalized.
Receiving an award from Prime Minster Abiy, Dr. Catherine Hamlin for her part said, “I have worked for a long time and committed to help Ethiopian women who are suffering from fistula. I love Ethiopia and its people. I adore helping others and delighted to see them being healthy.”
Over the past 60 years, 60,000 women have received life-changing surgery at Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia Hospital.
