President urges to align humanity with development

– Launches 1mln. volunteer mobilization

ADDIS ABABA – “Treating development and democratization independently of peace, love and respect to human rights will have no meaning” said President Sahlework Zewde, Patron of the Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) at the 61st ERCS Day marked here yesterday.

The President also called on citizens to join the society’s ‘one million new volunteers mobilization program.’ She said ‘Humanity for Peace’—the Day’s theme— is meant to avoid conflicts observed in many parts of the nation that internally displaced many children, women and elders creating destitute families.

Nobody cannot prioritize development, peace, democratization and respect to human rights, one over the other—love includes all, and there is peace in love, the president stated in her speech. The need to humanitarian supports could increase rapidly than ever unless corrective measures are taken by all the concerned volunteering humanitarians and the government, she added.

Love and peace are basic human needs; therefore, anything that disrupts love and peace of the people must be avoided, she noted. Similarly, Dr. Meshesha Shewaregga, ERCS Secretary General, said that the internal displacement of citizens is against the age-long peaceful coexistence of the society.

“The displacement is very threatening, and needs further humanitarian aids,” Whatever the reasons of displacements are, rehabilitating the displaced ones is the responsibility of all humanitarian volunteers, Dr Meshesha added. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Society Day was marked for the 73rd round with a theme: ‘Love’.
