Ethiopians need to prepare to support each other

BY YOHANES JEMANEH

Ethiopian Ambassador to the UK Teferi Melese appreciated Ethiopians in the Diaspora and fellow Ethiopians for extending multifaceted support for the government during the fight to defend the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the country.

On 10 April 2022, members of the ‘Defend Ethiopia Taskforce’ in the UK and Ireland held a virtual discussion with the Ambassador about rehabilitation and rebuilding plans in conflict-affected areas in the Amhara and Afar states.

Coordinators of the Defend Ethiopia UK and Ireland Taskforce also tabled a report on their field visits in Ethiopia that showed the level of destruction on public and private property. The meeting revealed the Taskforces’ plans to concretize project ideas to support rebuilding and rehabilitation efforts in the Amhara and Afar states.

The Ambassador also called on the Ethiopian Diaspora to protest HR.6600 and S.3199 setting aside the propaganda of anti-peace elements.

Call for denouncing HR6600 and S3199

The diaspora community ought to exert multilateral efforts to stand against the approval of HR6600 and S3199 laws that are outlined by the US government to harm Ethiopia and the people and make it excluded from the international financial system. In her recent interview with the Ethiopian News Agency, Journalist and Activist Betty Tekeste said that these laws are intended to stop development and security support of US to Ethiopia.

As to her the discontinuation of development support will invite severe consequences on several Ethiopians that have been benefiting from various projects. Moreover, the approval of the law will instigate the US to coordinate and influence other international financial organizations to refrain from providing financial support to Ethiopia. Therefore, all Ethiopians and friends must stand against the approval of this law which threatened to violate Ethiopia’s sovereignty, according to the Journalist

EMA calls on professionals to prepare for unpredictable health concerns

As it has been witnessed in coronavirus pandemic and the current conflict, new and unpredictable health threats can arise at any time in the 21st century that require physicians to quickly learn new skills, and sharpen existing competencies to save lives, Ethiopian Medical Association (EMA) President Tegbar Yigzaw (MD) said on Friday on the 58th Annual Conference of the Association.

His association has also awarded medal and certificates to outstanding health institutions and professionals in recognition of their remarkable role in saving lives mainly related to the war and the pandemic.

As to him, physicians and other medical professionals have demonstrated their utmost efforts to save lives in the past two challenging years that were punctuated with war and pandemic. Physicians in the country and in the diaspora have also mobilized resources to address people with the needs and support rebuilding of health facilities, he mentioned.

For Tegbar, the conflict is a bless in disguise to the medical professionals to reflect on the health system response to the conflict, learn from it, and generate expertise to build a stronger and resilient medical workforce and health system.
