Oromo, Somali people reinforce fraternity

ADAMA- The Oromo and Somali peoples brotherhood conference was concluded at the Adama town of the Oromia state yesterday with hopeful outcomes.

Speaking on the conference held under the theme ‘Our blood ties are the basis of our unity’ Oromia State Vice President Shimelis Abdisa said that as the two peoples are tied by culture, history, and marriage, those who are working to divide them will never be successful. “What binds us together is greater than what divides us and our ancestors stood together in the struggle against oppression.”

 He also underlined such discussions are necessary to sustain this age-old ties and the conference has to continue at zonal and woreda levels.

Seconding the idea of Shimalis, Mustefa Mohammad Omar, Vice president of Somali on his part said that so far, there has not been ethnic-based conflict between the two peoples. It was bandits who tried to fabricate conflicts between the two brotherly peoples.

He also apologized on behalf of the Somali people for the displacement of Oromo people from the Somali state. “The Somali state will assist the effort to resettle the displaced to their homes in collaboration with Oromia state.

While he presented a paper on the conference, Lencho Bati, who is also a famous politician said that strengthening fraternity between the two peoples is crucial to further strengthening cooperation between eastern Africa peoples.
