Memory

 BY YOHANES JEMANEH

In a collectivists’ land

People usually take the lead

If well nurtured

Or if shaped rude

But luck may coerce

The diffident to guide

As experienced by this kid

Performing before

A closed door

Coming forth to the front

Of peer mate

Beating the floor with cane

To keep rhythm lane

Accompanied by tuneful “hoo!”

The chorus of chirruping

Melody seems flowing

Till the verse went wrong

Soon after mentioning

Name of the householder

Using her moniker

The kids dispersed

Afraid to be cursed

A turning point to chorister

To give up reckless whisper

Forever.
