Addis Ababa City Council defends administrations legitimacy issue

ADDIS ABABA — Council of Addis Ababa City Administration says the current administration of the metropolis meets all the legal grounds to administer the city and urged the public to disregard false allegations surrounding the legitimacy of the administration and the deputy mayor.

In a statement issued recently, the council said the administration’s tenure was extended as per the decision of the House of Peoples Representatives by Article 2 (2) of Proclamation No 1094/2018, which was issued to revise the City Administrations Charter Proclamation Number 361/2002.

The statement added the deputy mayor is also appointed as per Article 3 of Proclamation No 1094/2018, which enshrines that the deputy mayor can be elected from either the members of the council or non-members.

The council has described the moves as illegal and anti constitutional endeavors with no avail to anyone and warned all parties to refrain from all efforts of instigating violence against the legally instated administration.

The current administration of the city is legitimate instated as per the endorsement of the Council and urged the public to stand against the misleading efforts of those who ignore the authority duly vested on the administration.

The Council reiterated that development, peace and democracy require joint efforts of all concerned parties and called on residents to

provide all rounded support and stand by the side of the administration. Residents should respect the Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land as well as the covenant of nations, nationalities and peoples.

Addis Ababa belongs to all nations, nationalities and peoples who wish to live together with love, mutual respect, tolerance and who stay vigilant to peace, development and democracy as well as a capital of Africa and international diplomatic community. Therefore, all issues raised regarding the metropolis should never be a cause for conflict as they can be addressed through the constitution which is the supreme law of the land.

The Council has finally called on the city administration to uphold ongoing activities of peace, security and good governance and urged the public to provide the usual collaboration to the city administration as well as law and security enforcement institutions.
