Proclamation amendment key in enhancing democratization, Attorney General

ADDIS ABABA- Media freedom of information proclamation number 590/2000 needs swift amendment to create more liberty of media and freedom of expression, The FDRE Attorney General disclosed.

Speaking in a panel discussion held yesterday with pertinent stakeholders, Vise Attorney General Gedion Timotios (PhD) stated that the intended media reform would curb challenges thereby enhancing media and freedom of expression.

He added that broadcast service proclamation number 533/1999 would be revised to give ample opportunity for proliferation of media outlets.

‘‘The amendment of media proclamation is highly crucial. It would create more room for freedom. Thus, we will prevail on stakeholders to revise it.We encourage those who conducted research on media to work with us,’’ he insisted.

Gedion stressed that the amendment will include rules and regulations that indicate rights and responsibilities of media professionals.

Selomon Goshu is Team Leader of Research Group at the Attorney General. In a research paper he presented he said that freedom of information proclamation amendment is needed to address problems that surface related to information flow from the government to the public. It will fill the gaps as well. The discussion held will afford ample output for creating a robust media which ensures a democratic system and rapid economic growth, according to him.
