ADDIS ABABA – The arrest of junta’s senior officials would expose the unfounded rumors in Tigray State as a number of people have been misled by some irresponsible individuals’ fake news and smear campaigns, Mekelle City Mayor said.
Mayor Atakilti Hailesillassie told local media that the people of Tigray are now obtaining true information regarding the whereabouts of the junta’s ringleaders. He, therefore, said the misinformation would stop soon as some of the junta’s core leaders are being arrested and killed.
It is to be recalled that the spread of fake information had created confusion in the community. There had been cases of robbery in the State as the junta had released 10,000 prisoners from all corrective centers of the state deliberately before the law enforcement operation concluded. These prisoners have looted and destructed the public property .
Strengthening the police force so as to investigate the crimes is being carried out. The act apprehending the fugitives to the court is being carried out by the police. It would yield significant contribution to the peacekeeping missions, as to him.
Regarding peace building efforts in Mekelle, he said the city administration has been working on restoring peace and stability through distributing humanitarian aid and resuming public services .
Atakilti said the law enforcement operation was successful in disarming the junta and mobilizing the community to safeguard the stability of the area . Community based peace restoration was carried out successful, he added.
Moreover, he said that all business organizations have been re-opened, including public offices electricity, telecom, and transportation services .
The federal government and other humanitarian organizations are now providing humanitarian assistance to the needy. The displaced people are being resettled ,as to Atakilti.
The Mayor urged the people of Tigray to engage in the developmental and rehabilitation projects.
