Nation ready to view Eclipse from Lalibela town

ADDIS ABABA – Preparations have been finalized to make a live transmission of the Annualr Solar Eclipse as it arrives in the historical town of Lalibela tomorrow, according to Ethiopian Space Society.

Society Deputy Manager Sisay Fantahun told The Ethiopian Herald that, before reaching the ancient historical and tourist destination place lalibela town, the annular solar eclipse will pass through small towns in west and central Ethiopia.

“In addition to its significance as a historic site and tourist destination, Lalibela is chosen for observing the event and simply recording to the next generation due to its simplicity to transport the necessary logistics’’ according to Sisay.

He further remarked that the town is becoming center of space science as it is located on a high altitude as well as free from lamination and humidity, which make it conducive for observing and facilitating the activities a simple manner.

He also added that, an observatory center which is bigger than the one operational at Entoto, is under construction in the town by Ethiopian Space Science Technology, University of Gonder, Mekele University, Bahir Dar University, and Woldia University.

Director-General of Ethiopian Space Science Technology Institute, Solomon Belay told The Ethiopian News Agency that the annular eclipse that occurs in different parts of Ethiopia will stay from 6:50 a.m to 9:30 a.m, and over 98 percent of the sun will be covered by the moon at Lalibela.

He indicated that preparations are finalized in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Amhara Regional State as well as with other stakeholders to mark the day.

Noting space tourism as crucial sector for economic development, the advisor pointed out that more than 20,000 visitors were registered to observe the annular eclipse in Ethiopia. But due to the ban of peoples movement in connection with the outbreak of COVID-19.

Preparations are made for live transmission of the Eclipse , it was learnt.
