Oxford University inaugurates first ever handbook on a single African country’s economy

ADDIA ABABA- The first handbook ever by Oxford University on a single African Economy assures that the successful industrialization in Ethiopia drives challenged the long-held erroneous assumption that industrial policy will never work in poor African countries. During the launch of the book, “The Handbook of the Ethiopian Economy” held in Addis Ababa University Yesterday, editors of the book stated that Ethiopia is emerging as the fastest growing economy in Africa.

One of the editors Senior Minister and Special Advisor to the Ethiopian Prime Minister, Arkebe Oqubay (Phd), stated that the unique model of Ethiopian development with the state plays a central role, the recognized fastest growing economy during the past 15 years and expansion of productive investment & successful industrialization with expansion of industrial parks challenged the wrong assumption of African industrialization.

Dr. Arkebe stated that the handbook deeply covers Ethiopian economy in time and issues combining history, state capital, and political, economic and social elements in a very systematic manner. Among the contributors of the book, Addis Ababa University President, Professor Tassew Woldehanna on his part stated that the handbook examines the economic policies of structural transformation on the Ethiopian economy.

The book explains the lessons learned from Ethiopia’s unique development model to Africa more broadly, he said, The Oxford Handbook of the Ethiopian Economy is 1000 pages long divided in 50 chapters. More than 70 scholars of the field have contributed their works and the handbook will play a vital role for policy makers, as a reference of Ethiopian economic history and the present activities.
