ADDIS ABABA – Over 200 million USD was obtained from the export of Coffee, tea and spices during the last four months of the fiscal year in effect, said Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority.
The Authority exported 84, 000 tons of commodities while its plan is to export 300, 000 tons this year, Authority, Director General, Dr. Adugna Debela said. Various measures have been taken to boost the export including the formation of a national committee that oversee and tackle hurdles of the sector, he added.
Also, surveys have been undertaken to further improve issues relating to quality, he said. “We also cooperate with agriculture extension workers in areas including the importation of coffee seeds that suits with Ethiopia’s ecology to enhance productivity.”
Hussien Agraw, President of Ethiopian Coffee Exporters Association, for his part said that the challenge with regards to quality issues and proper implementation of guidelines has to soon be alleviated. “The reforms being undertaken will help in tackling sector’s challenges.”
