ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia obtained two million USD from waste plastic export over the mid-term of this fiscal year, Chemical and Construction Input Industry Development Institute announced.
The export destinations of waste plastic are the U.S., Bangladesh, and Italy, said Institute’s Marketing and Development Director Abubeker Hasen.
Foreign exporters take the lion’s share in the export performance of waste plastic over the period, according to him.
The total weight of the item exported hits 4,000 tons and the Institute has accomplished 95 percent of its target set for the mid-term, he said.
He said the number of exporters has shown a marked increase as compared with last year’s same period. “There were around 11 exporters last year and their number is pushed to around seventy this year.”
The Institute’s technical supports, particularly in a market feasibility study, are among the reasons for the increment of exporters, according to Abubeker.
Aside from the earning, the export of plastic has been contributing to the protection of environmental pollution, he added.
“Jobs have also been created as a result of several youths who have engaged in collecting and delivering plastic waste.”
