ADDIS ABABA-African Union Peace and Security Commission demands sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe and Sudan be lifted.
Highlighting on the peace and security situation on the continent, AU Commission Commissioner for Peace and Security Ambassador Smail Chergui signaled the importance of addressing economic challenges in ensuring security and peace in Africa.
“We demand that sanction in Zimbabwe be removed that has been in place for 20 years now. The sanctions are immoral and have been hurting the country for two decades.”
Lifting sanctions is imperative to redress the economic problems of the country. With regard to Sudan, the Commissioner said that he is happy on all developments in Sudan and remain concerned on the economic situation in the country.”
The AU reiterates the necessity of lifting all sanctions on Sudan including US lists of states supporting terrorism according to the Commissioner. The Union also welcomes the ongoing talks between the US and Sudan and expect good outcome from it, he added.
It is important that Sudan is delisted If it is not delisted from the list of states supporting terrorism, none of the international financial institutions can step in to avail finance to the country.
He indicated that a representative will travel to Harare, Khartoum, Washington, Brussels and London to express the string position of the AU Assembly.
