61 Unions to engage in agro-processing

• Unions creating jobs


ADDIS ABABA- Around sixty-one cooperative unions are in the pipeline to involve in agro-processing aimed at creating jobs and supplying products at fair price.

The Agency’s Executive Director Osman Surer told this reporter that the Unions will supply value-added products to the market. “The production of edible oil, dairy products and fruit juice is some of the areas the Unions will invest.”

“The Cooperative Unions have been playing a major role in creating jobs for the nation and making the bread of quite a lot of people buttered well”, disclosed the Federal Cooperative Agency. According to the director, the Cooperative Unions have created two million job opportunities on a national scale bringing into play a wide spectrum of industries on different levels.

The jobs are created in various sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, fertilizer, seed supply, service provision, crop harvesting and other related aspects. “We place value on creating job opportunities for the youth and women residing in the left, right and center of the urban and rural areas. If truth be told, the total number of the Cooperative Unions has shot to 21 million.

He elucidated that the cooperative unions have been playing a part in stabilizing the market for the most part during holidays. He went on saying, “In addition to distributing and selling products to the local community at the recommended price, we are involved in exporting coffee and sesame products. Furthermore, we have been carrying out quite a lot of activities to improve service delivery.

“On the other hand, the Agency is working hand-in-glove with the Industrial Park Development Corporation, Ministry of Agriculture and other pertinent bodies to ensure productivity supplying the required inputs.” The number of primary Cooperative Unions has shot to over 89,000. At this point in time, 907 producers of agro-processing industry and three cooperative federations are found all over the country.
