Gov’t offices restricting access to information: Ombudsman

ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopian Institute of Ombudsman said government offices are closing doors on the media and restricting access to information.

The Institute also requested the incumbent to find lasting solutions for the religion-based violence that has been repeatedly occurring in various parts of the country. According to the press release the Institute sent to the Ethiopian Press Agency, officials at the federal or state level have not been cooperative enough in providing information whenever members of the media try to balance their stories.

Indicating that Tigray State Government Communication Office, Dembidolo University, Addis Ababa Housing Agency are some of the government institutions that are not cooperative in providing information, the Institute advised and requested them to refrain themselves from such acts and to improve their working system.

Citing the recent violence have targeted religious institutions and followers, the the Institute said the fact that the responsible government authorities did not respond to the concerns and question raised by these institutions have caused endless violence.

Indicating that the issue has created a grievance among and threats on religious institutions and followers, the Ombudsman requests the government to respond to the queries and find lasting solutions for the problems.

Indicating that there are good governance problems in some Woreda’s in relation to compensation payment, the press release said, the Institute of the Ombudsman has requested the government to give a timely response to the issue.
