Over 500 mln. embezzled Birr returned

ADDIS ABABA – The Attorney General Office announced that it has secured over 500 million birr embezzled money through various legal processes in the past six months alone.

Presenting his Office’s six month report before the Parliament yesterday, Attorney General Birhanu Tsegaye said that they have been working with different countries in a bid to devise strong and clear mechanism, structure capable enough to collect the money that is obtained from corruption and other financial crimes.

He also told MPs that the Office has brought in 1,404 individuals suspected of committing corruption, financial crimes, human rights violations and inciting social instabilities before the law in the past six months as well.

As to him, there are 1,596 suspects that have hidden themselves in and outside of the country, and avoided arrest. He stressed that the Office has identified 28 criminals that have fled the country to avoid arrest, and that it is working/collaborating with the countries in which they are hiding.

According to him, they are getting constructive response from these countries. Apart from bringing suspects before the law, the Office has been changing the previous legal framework that pulls individuals and government officials to commit different crimes.

Although the Office has been bringing radical change in terms of upholding the rule of law, he said to the Parliament, crimes related to ethnic issue has been increasing in the country due to various reasons. Meanwhile the Parliament also approved the bill to amend the Civil Aviation proclamation.
