Commission vows to strengthen public institutions to realize SDGs

ADDIS ABABA – Civil Service Commission said that strengthening public institutions is crucial for the realization of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Commission Commissioner Bezabih Gebreyes said that, it is important to improve the performance of development institutions so as to realize Agenda – 2025.

The Commission is committed to buttress institutions’ capacity for effective and efficient service delivery. To this effect, commitment is needed from the government and responsible institutions to narrow the gap that is seen at institutional levels, he indicated.

As to him, effectiveness, accountability and inclusiveness are the principles of well-functioning governance for sustainable development. However, public institutions do not adequately apply the principles of transparency and accountability in public administration to execute effective and efficient public service delivery.

Dr. Bacha Kebede, President of Ethiopian Public Administration Association (EPAA) for his part indicated that, strengthening the linkage between universities and public institutions is highly important to produce skilled manpower.

Poorly functioning public sector institutions and weak governance greatly limit growth and equitable development in the country. Helping the public sector work well is a two-fold process which involves defining its role in line with economic rationale and its own capacity, and helping it to enhance its performance within that role. Supporting higher education with all necessary things is crucial, he indicated.

Ambo University President Dr. Tadesse Kenea on his part said that skilled human power and efficient service is commonly related and universities play significant role to produce skilled workforce. Ambo University in this regard is taking different actions to strengthen the capacity of its human resources through various means.

Skilled man power is crucial at all levels especially at administrative and service delivery institutions. By taking the advantage of the ongoing reform strengthening and reforming institutions that benefits both the institution and the country broadly is crucial, Tadesse opined.
