Many public and private companies in Ethiopia have digitized their services, whilst most of them are connected to the cyber world. There are still many more businesses in the pipeline to joining the new world, which presents both opportunities and risks to the users.
The cyber environment has already brought unprecedented challenges to governments in general and communities of the world in particular. Even what is termed as the developed world has not been immune from facing the challenge. However, as this part of the globe is often the source of the technology, with deep knowledge of its sophistications, they have managed to build mechanisms to overcome and countercyber-security threats.
Ethiopia’s cyber security protection capacity is just in its infancy. The country has established a Cyber-securityForce very recently. While announcing the objective of reforming the security sector, Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed broke the news of the establishment of this force and its purposes.
This endeavor of the government should; however, be reinforced by other similar measures. In the first place, as the threat has an international nature, pertinent international bodies have to work in concert with the Cyber security Force. Formulating policies, sharing information, fostering the transfer of technological know-how and financial cooperation could set some of the areas of the joint efforts.
The other most important issue is that Ethiopian higher learning institutions should work with a sense of urgency to make themselves a hub of competent human capital that safeguard the national cyberspace in general and that of businesses in particular.
