ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopian Patriots Association urged the youth to appreciate unity in diversity, and repeat the victory of Adwa by winning the fight against poverty and anti-peace forces. Association President Lij Daniel Jote told The Ethiopian Herald that the secret behind Ethiopian early period victories including Adwa is the unity of citizens.
Ethiopians, regardless of age, gender, religion, ethnicity or any other background took part at the battle of Adwa to protect the sovereignty and independence of their homeland. The victory is the success of all Ethiopians and it reflects not only the spirit of the people; but the extent to how much every single Ethiopian loves his/her country, he noted. Not only that, it clearly portrays how Ethiopia is built by the blood and sacrifice of every single Ethiopian, and it is the common home for all, he added. “We have no a history that can divide and separate us.
Our forefathers and fathers scarified themselves for this country in different situations. However, misinterpretations and misunderstanding of history have harmed the long-lived culture of our communities.” He further noted that though Ethiopia has diverse culture, ethnic and religious backgrounds, things that tie us together are much stronger than those differentiate us.
Ambassador Alemayehu Abebe, Vice President of the Association, for his part said that Ethiopians have sacrificed their lives to build and pass on this country to generation. He noted that when we celebrate the Adwa victory every year, we have to consider the value of unity and that all things are possible if there is a unity. He underscored that Ethiopia is a model for Africa for having a culture of diversity, respect and coexistence between them.
To further inculcate unity within the new generation, families, media, education and religious institutions should teach about things that would help further enhance this culture of coexistence. Beyond rhetoric acts, today’s generation should work towards repeating the history of their forefathers by cooperatively working to fight against poverty. In this regard, the reform launched as national level can pave the way to strength unity of public in the country, he further noted.
