Japan enhances education in Dawro zone with new school infrastructure

ADDIS ABABA – The Model Primary School in Dawro Zone has received a major upgrade, thanks to a generous donation from the Government of Japan.

A newly constructed four-classroom block and a six-room latrine facility for female students were officially handed over this week, in a project aimed at boosting educational quality and sanitation.

Funded under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots and Human Security Projects (GGP), the 76,000 USD initiative is set to significantly improve the learning environment for over 500 students, including 240 girls who will now benefit from enhanced hygiene facilities.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, representing the Embassy of Japan in Addis Ababa, HORI Kaori reaffirmed her government’s commitment to supporting grassroots development in Ethiopia. “We believe this project will not only strengthen education but also improve sanitation—especially for girls—creating better opportunities for the next generation,” she said.

The new infrastructure is expected to reduce overcrowding in classrooms, promote better hygiene practices, and encourage higher school attendance among girls.

Since its launch in 1989, Japan’s GGP initiative has supported more than 450 projects across Ethiopia, focusing on key sectors such as education, healthcare, and women’s empowerment—with the goal of addressing basic human needs and promoting inclusive community development.

Local officials, including the Mayor of Waka Town Administration, attended the ceremony, underscoring the significance of the project for the local community. The new facilities are seen as a symbol of Japan-Ethiopia friendship and a step forward in the journey toward equitable and accessible education in rural areas.
