
ADDIS ABABA – The Oromia Tourism Commission has announced the launch of a space tourism initiative aimed at attracting adventurous travelers and boosting the region’s tourism sector.
The announcement was made during a signing ceremony between the Oromia Tourism Commission and the Ethiopia Space Science and Geospatial Institute, held at the Entoto Observatory Center.
The Institute’s Deputy Director, Betelhem Nigusse, stated that the agreement will provide various research services tailored to the needs of the tourism sector, emphasizing the importance of delivering relevant information and maintaining quality in tourism-related services. Betelhem highlighted that research and development are crucial to supporting this initiative, noting that the collaboration between tourism and space science will create numerous economic opportunities for local communities.
The Oromia Tourism Commission’s Deputy Commissioner, Nega Wedajo, noted that the partnership is essential for leveraging economic benefits from the region’s tourism sector. He emphasized that this agreement marks the beginning of ongoing collaboration aimed at enhancing tourism capacity.
The initiative will harness advanced technologies and collaboration with leading space organizations to offer unique experiences, including suborbital flights and space-related activities. Nega stated that the project is designed to position Oromia as a key player in the emerging space tourism market. As part of the initiative, the Commission will also promote educational programs on space science, aiming to inspire the younger generation and foster interest in STEM fields.
The launch event is expected to draw significant attention, highlighting Oromia’s potential as a destination for both terrestrial and extraterrestrial adventures.
With this bold step, the Oromia Tourism Commission aims not only to diversify its tourism offerings but also to attract international visitors eager to experience the thrill of space travel while enjoying the stunning landscapes and rich culture that Oromia has to offer.
