ADDIS ABABA – The Ministry of Innovation and Technology (MoIT) is striving to establish a strong science and technology ecosystem in Ethiopia, East Africa, and the entire African continent.

The 3rd African Robotics Championship 2025, organized by Ethio Robotics in collaboration with the Ministry of Innovation and Technology, has officially commenced.

In his opening remarks, MoIT State Minister Baysa Bedada (PhD) emphasized the ministry’s commitment to positioning Ethiopia as a leader in science and technology in the region.

“Today, the world is experiencing intense competition in technological and scientific innovation. As a result, the science and technology sector is not just important but essential for survival,” he stated.

To harness the benefits of this sector, Ethiopia has made significant strides in recent years, implementing policies, strategies, and programs to support scientific and technological advancements. The ministry is working to further expand the ecosystem, aiming to make Ethiopia a hub for science and technology in East Africa and beyond.

Baysa also highlighted the crucial role of the private sector in supporting technological development, particularly in infrastructure and energy.

Ethiopia is actively inviting stakeholders to collaborate with the ministry to drive innovation for sustainable development and inclusive progress.

Furthermore, he stressed Ethiopia’s efforts to foster partnerships with universities, private firms, and international organizations, ensuring that research translates into real-world solutions. The African Robotics Championship serves as a platform for young talents to shape the future of technology in Africa, pushing boundaries and inspiring innovation.

The country is focusing on inclusive, resilient, and forward-thinking initiatives, including the Digital Ethiopia 2025 strategy and homegrown reform plans, aimed at creating a conducive environment for investment and entrepreneurship. Additionally, innovation centers are being established to support young innovators.

Ethio Robotics Manager Bethlehem Habtamu announced that over 400 students from various African countries will participate in the competition.

“The competition will run for three consecutive days, and the winners will earn the opportunity to compete in an international robotics championship in the United States,” she stated.

With such initiatives, Ethiopia is paving the way for a thriving science and technology ecosystem, reinforcing its commitment to innovation and progress in Africa.
