
ADDIS ABABA – The Japan International Cooperation Agency’s (JICA) Chair program is playing a pivotal role in fostering industrial transformation in Ethiopia and across the African continent, according to Addis Ababa University (AAU) officials.
A recent JICA Chair program event, hosted by AAU and JICA under the theme “Transforming the Industrial Structure: Experiences and Lessons from Japan and Africa,” featured insights from Japanese professors and experts on Japan’s industrial development and Ethiopia’s manufacturing sector.
AAU Vice President Professor Worash Getaneh emphasized the program’s value in providing “tangible strategies for industrial growth” to policymakers and industry leaders. He highlighted the collaboration between JICA and AAU as a testament to their shared commitment to knowledge advancement and mutual benefit.
“This program offers a timely opportunity to explore strategies for successful industrial transformation in Ethiopia and across Africa,” Professor Worash stated, reaffirming the university’s dedication to supporting the country’s industrialization goals through innovation, research, and technological advancement. He also expressed gratitude for JICA’s ongoing support and collaboration.
Japanese Ambassador to Ethiopia, Shibata Hironori, reiterated Japan’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Ethiopia in areas of peace and economic development. He described Japan as Ethiopia’s “oldest and closest friend” and pledged to deepen their long-standing bilateral relationship.
The event also acknowledged a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between AAU and JICA, aimed at bolstering the university’s startup ecosystem and aligning with Japan’s broader support for Ethiopia’s economic growth.
Amb. Shibata commended Ethiopia’s recent macroeconomic reforms, recognizing their potential to accelerate the nation’s industrialization. He emphasized the importance of integrating advanced technologies from developed countries with Ethiopia’s unique history and culture to drive progress. He further highlighted the JICA Chair program as a vital platform for realizing Ethiopia’s industrial aspirations.
The JICA Chair program has previously hosted various initiatives focusing on education, the economy, startups, and other relevant topics.
