Harnessing African Union (AU) tourism potentials

Ethiopia, known as the “Land of Origins,” is a country steeped in history and natural beauty. Ethiopia boasts an exceptionally rich and diverse cultural heritage that has been preserved over centuries. From ancient Rock-Hewn churches in Lalibela to the vibrant tribes of the Omo Valley, Ethiopia offers a treasure trove of cultural experiences for tourists to explore. Ethiopia’s landscapes are among the most awe-inspiring and diverse in the world. From lush highland plateaus to rugged mountain ranges, deep canyons, and shimmering lakes, Ethiopia never fails to mesmerize visitors with its natural wonders.

In recent years, the country has made significant strides in promoting its tourism industry and attracting visitors from around the world. The AU Annual Summit has played a pivotal role in showcasing Ethiopia’s tourism potential, providing a platform for the country to present its unique offerings to a global audience. With a diverse and captivating cultural heritage, stunning landscapes, ancient historical sites, and welcoming locals, Ethiopia is fast becoming a top tourist destination.

The Ethiopian government has recognized the importance of developing the tourism sector and has been implementing various initiatives to attract travelers. One such initiative is the development of new tourist destinations, infrastructure, including the expansion of airports and the improvement of road networks to enhance connectivity and accessibility.

The African Union (AU) annual summit is an important gathering of African leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders aimed at fostering collaboration and development on the continent. In recent years, one of the key focus areas of the AU has been boosting tourism in Africa, and Ethiopia has emerged as a frontrunner in this endeavor.

Thus, the AU Annual Summit serves as a catalyst for Ethiopia’s tourism industry, creating opportunities for networking, collaboration, and showcasing the country’s cultural and natural treasures. The event attracts high-profile delegates from across the continent and beyond, resulting in increased visibility and interest in Ethiopia as a tourist destination. Moreover, the Summit provides a platform for Ethiopia to engage with international stakeholders, fostering partnerships that contribute to sustainable tourism development.

Currently, preparations are finalized to successfully host this year’s AU’s annual summit.

The government announced that Ethiopia has made extensive preparations in all aspects to host the 44th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council Meeting and the 37th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the AU Heads of State and Government of the African Union which is scheduled to be held from February 14 to 18th, in Addis Ababa.

State Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Chairperson of the AU Summit National Committee, Ambassador Birtukan Ayano in her media briefing earlier today, said that the Assembly will be held following Ethiopia’s major diplomatic successes on the world stage, recalling Ethiopia’s membership of the BRICS bloc and the prestigious Agricola Medal which was awarded to the Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

The Permanent Representative of Ethiopia to the AU and UNECA, Ambassador Ayele Lire, presented the activities that were being undertaken in collaboration with the member states to successfully host the conference.

Representatives from various member institutions of the National Committee also touched upon the main activities carried out in their respective institutions for the summit.

Meanwhile, the Ethiopian Tourism and Hotel Market Association said it has given prime attention to ensuring a world-class service to participants of the African Union Summit and utilizing the event to help the revival of conference tourism.

Some 187 star-designated hotels in Addis Ababa are ready to welcome participants of the African Union Summit which is scheduled to take place from 14-18 February 2024.

Association’s President Getahun Alemu told The Ethiopian Herald that efforts are underway to capitalize on the Summit to enable AU guests to learn about Addis Ababa’s famous tourist sites thereby building the country’s positive image.

Prime attention has been given to maintain the safety and security of AU guests and to address any of their concerns in partnership with relevant stakeholders. Hence, hoteliers are ready to receive and host guests by ensuring security, creating a conducive environment, and providing seamless communication and transport services and the like.

Getahun further noted that providing accurate information about tourist attractions and city events is something taken into account to enhance the guests’ experience and to make their stay in Addis comfortable and memorable.

“We, along with relevant stakeholders, are ready to receive the guests and make them visit Addis Ababa’s attraction sites including Entoto, Unity, and Friendship parks and others and help them to enjoy their stay here.”

Also, the association is working to ensure the safety of conference attendees by implementing additional security measures and collaborating with different actors including tourism authorities, local businesses, and hoteliers in destination promotion.

According to the President, clear objectives, regular meetings with concerned bodies, and information sharing are the main components of the association in its efforts to help Addis to become the center of conference tourism. Alongside this, consolidated efforts are underway to promote Ethiopia’s peace and stability and build the confidence of tourists to come and visit the country.

By the same token, Tourism Destination Development and Domestic Tourism Expansion Director with the Addis Ababa City Culture, Art and Tourism Bureau Samson Ayenachew recently said that bold steps have been taken to build star-designated hotels, recreational centers, multipurpose halls, and malls. Such faculties are set to host international forums and trade fairs and to attract more foreign tourists to Ethiopia.

In sum, the African Union annual summit serves as a catalyst for Ethiopia’s tourism industry by providing a platform to showcase the country’s cultural and natural treasures. Harnessing the tourism potentials of Ethiopia requires collaboration with other African Union member states. By promoting joint tourism packages and offering combined itineraries, Ethiopia can encourage travelers to explore multiple destinations within the African continent. This not only benefits Ethiopia but also helps to boost the tourism industry of other African countries. Through initiatives aimed at developing infrastructure and preserving cultural heritage, Ethiopia has positioned itself as a rising star in African tourism.

As the Land of Origins, Ethiopia invites travelers to embark on a journey of discovery, immersing themselves in its rich history, vibrant culture, and breathtaking landscapes. Plan your visit to Ethiopia and experience the magic this unique destination has to offer. Welcome!
